Re: I am still around
I check the forum about every morning before heading off to work just to see how everyone is doing! By my last count, I have not brewed a beer in about 1 1/2 years. Time gets away. I figure that I will brew a batch this winter now that the water is starting to cool off. I feel that I will be a begi...

Re: All grain troubleshoot
I agree with all the above. It sounds like you did a no sparge. Added water once (well I guess twice to mashout) and only drained once. Right? You'll get much better efficiency it you batch sparge or fly sparge. John Palmer's "How to brew" has an online version of the book that describes b...

Those can be nice in the kettle for whole hops too.

KCMB annual competition 2012
Enter early and enter often. http://kcbiermeisters.org/comp/
If anyone has extra longneck sixpack holders and/or cardboard cases we could use some for transporting entries. Either I or Chris can pick them up at the meeting this week if you would like to help us. Thanks.

Re: Cold water in Lawrence!
Yeah Dan, that is nice. Would love some more info on the motor you used. I can only imagine how much faster it would chill with either that or a whirlpool arm, which I'm also seriously considering. Matt It's been a few years since I made the stirrer. I don't remember which motor I bought from scipl...

Re: Cold water in Lawrence!
My IC fits around the wall on my 20 gal kettle. I've recirculated but settled on a stirrer instead. Picked up a small gearmotor from sciplus.com and made the stirrer out of 1/2" Cu pipe. It hangs in the kettle at about 20 min to sanitize it. http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab348/kcbrew/DSCF0...

Re: Cold water in Lawrence!
One of the KC guys had a 1/4" chiller I saw the other day. Must have had 70+ feet and looked like a birdnest. I asked why - he's a plumber so Cu cost was nothing - and it chills super fast

Best thing about brewing this time of year - not screwing around with ice.Jensen wrote:Lawrence tap water is finally cold!!!!

That yeast, not sure. But 65df is usually OK. Might slow it down a bit, or not. Your just growing yeast, not making beer. RDWHAHB

Re: Seminar?
No fermcap. That will probably get messy. I'd rig a plastic bag around it so the nice new stirplate doesn't get blowoff all over it.

Re: Making a yeast starter and stepping up yeast
100gm/liter makes it simple for measuring. I stick with that regardless of the OG of the beer I'll brew. No references, but I've heard several times that a higher gravity starter may hurt more than help. I crash in a dorm fridge most of the time so probably ~40df - 24 hours is fine for most of the y...

Re: Seminar?
Always order more than one stirbar. Somehow they occassionally end up in the fermenter for a few weeks. Guess how I know. I heard a tip from Jensen several months ago. He holds a magnet against the bottom of the flask during pitch to attract and hold the stirbar. My flask has a SB label on it so I ...
