For Sale: Three Quoin Party Pigs (used)
Three pigs (used) with three new refill pressure pouches + inflator bulb. One carrying strap for a pig is broken, but a replacement can be ordered from Quoin. New, the pigs sell for approximately $40, and come with two pouches. The inflator bulb is sold separately. I am selling ours for $60 total, a...

Re: Request short-term loan of brain cells
Hmm. According to my calculations that converts to FG 1.009 when corrected for alcohol content, and ABV of 11.3! jim Yep, that's what I came up with. Sounds to me like it's time to bottle. To all those bug fans out there, I do apologize. You were a few SG points away from being gifted a batch to pl...

Request short-term loan of brain cells
Hey all. Without going into specifics, we've had some major shi* going down family-wise over the past three weeks, and I don't trust my assessment of a fermentation issue (which is, btw, the absolute lowest of priorities right now). Those of you who saw us at 23rd street a few weeks ago heard me dis...

Re: Comparison/substitution sugars for priming
I've saved back a few bottles of the pumpkin beer priming sugar experiment, where I divided the 5 gallon batch and primed half with the brown sugar that my base recipe suggested, and the remaining half with agave syrup. All other conditions are the same, including storage conditions. The differences...

Re: AG Brewing in Cold Weather
I've seen where other brewers do that successfully. My main concern was damage to equipment outside (which is actually warmer and more comfortable for us than the garage) given temperature differentials on the exposed metal. Please don't get cocky with your CO situation, and keep using the sensor. T...

Re: AG Brewing in Cold Weather
Awesome! If anyone else is considering brewing this winter, I've also read that the dry air will cause more to boil off than in the summer, so I'll need to increase the amount of water I start with. Thank you for the comforting and wise words. I'd hate to think a little thing like 12" of snow a...

AG Brewing in Cold Weather
The extended forecast is disappointing - especially given that we have 2 batches on the calendar for February. The brewer's discomfort aside, what concerns should I have with brewing outside in cold temperatures? I'm sure I'll burn through more propane to get the mash and wort up to temperature, but...

Re: What would these additions do to the beer. . . .
Sally (Travel by the Pint) has some great techniques using these type of spices. Thank you, Andy! I stumble a bit here and there, but it's fun operating on the ragged edge, and even mistakes are a learning opportunity. I have found a terrific resource in "The Homebrewer's Garden." It does...

Re: Comparison/substitution sugars for priming
Call me skeptical, but I have my doubts that priming sugars have that much effect on the finished beer. Okay, Skeptical. Sounds like I need to save two bottles back for you so you can see for yourself. It's doesn't change the profile like, it had been a porter but the priming sugar changed it into ...

Re: Comparison/substitution sugars for priming
I think it's definitely worth experimenting with alternatives to discover how it affects the final flavor profile, then choosing a priming sugar based on what characteristics you ultimately want your beer to have. I don't think there is anything wrong with corn sugar per se. But I do think it's used...
