Lost Coast Brewing Co. "Winterbraun"

Lost Coast Brewery in Eureka, CA. Expecting something more like a holiday ale, I guess I should've just read the six-pack carrier & the label when they said: "Winterbraun ale is a richer, stronger version of our signature beer, Downtown Brown." and "Winterbraun is brewed with Amer...

YES!!

Can't believe I forgot to review this one when I got it a few weeks ago but what Bill said except (again, remembering I love hops and strong alcoholic brews) I loved every drop of this stuff! (P.S. I Loooooooooooove grapefruit!) Didn't notice the alcohol coming through as it warmed up as it didn't t...

Sucess!

Transferred the Humbug to another carboy tonight & it had dropped another 6 points for a total of 44! That's more like it. Trying out the space heater trick with a batch of bitter that only dropped 27 in the primary when it should've been closer to 35. Maybe it was the fermenting temperature (or...

Oh no, we ain't 'out of the woods' until next year when it's drinkin' time! We're just 'back on a somewhat ' consistent course on this batch of Humbug. The nice thang? The Humbug has so much spices, etc. in it if I did screw up you probably won't be able to taste any off-flavors. Pee & Ess, set ...

Actually, so far so good.

Tried it last night on low for about 6 hours and cranked it up this morning for an hour before work.

Temp got to 72-74 both times and this morning I'm getting a 'bloop' once every nine seconds!

So if I took one of the oil-filled space heaters, set it on low & placed it about 3-4 feet away from the carboy just to keep the temp up between 70-80 that should be enough of a po' boys solution right??

I dunno. Temperature sticker on the carboy hasn't moved too much out of the 68-72 range when I transferred it last Thurs. This isn't the first time I've had a batch of (you name it) take off days or even weeks after transferring so it's not unprecedented. In fact, after the first time I saw one take...

Hallelujah!Brothers & Sisters, Friends of the Revolution

The Humbug is fermenting again......... WOO HOO! Noticed some unusual-looking growth-type spots on top of wort in carboy Sunday. Noticed more of the same yesterday. & tonight?? Foam completely over the surface of the top of the wort with intermittent bubbles & the airlock is faintly, sweetl...

Keeping in mind.............

If & when I make a decision it'll probably be closer to the end of the year if not next year/spring. Also, got the copper-coil wort-chiller and other various homebrew-helper items like a Phils siphon gizmo, etc. if I pull the trigger. John, PMed you about the mini-kegs. Transferred the Humbug to...

Thanks all!

Been using the same hydrometer I got in the 'kit' from Bob's Lawrence homebrewing place on 7th street (the old H&R Block tax bunker) back in '95 whatever that may tell you. As for the proofing info, thanks however I always thought the wort had to be under 80 degrees or you'd kill the yeasties. T...

Get good aeration before pitching always, stirred up like hell with foam & bubbles galore before pitching the yeast and shutting the lid. Whaddya mean, 'proofing' the dry yeast? The 2 lbs. extra was extract (Alexanders dark). The inconsistent drop in gravity has happened across all recipes (Humb...

Temps

Temperatures have been about the same for all batches: Starts out around 78-82 & stays there during the "high-bloopin'" then cools down to room temp (around 68-72) afterwards. As for the Humbug, it did the same and there has been no significant temp change after adding the fourth packa...

Consistent fermentation?? HA!!!

OK. Brewed a batch of the Holiday Humbug Mojo last Sunday. Used almost 2 lbs. more malt than ever before (Alexanders dark--I'm still an extract brewer). Used not the usual 2 pkgs (7gm) of dry Coopers yeast but 3 pkgs. Took off within hours instead of almost a day like many other brews (YAY!). Kept f...

Full Moon Winter Ale seasonal from Blue Moon Brewing Co.

.....out of Toronto (yes, THAT Canada, eh?). Granted, I'm not the best one to judge an 'abbey ale' style offering due to my love of hops, etc. (read other reviews for my preferences). However, they make sure you know that this beer is 'brewed with roasted malts and a hint of dark Belgian sugar' not ...
