I took rusty parts of it down to the metal where I could with a wire brush/sanding disc and an angle grinder. Otherwise I just knocked off the surface rust and other assorted crud. The outside was painted with high temp matte black paint in several layers. After the paint cured I rubbed the whole thing down inside and out with vegetable oil.
