FSB "Brewer for a Day"
Congrats to Nate Poell for winning the Brewer for a Day writing contest at Free State! He'll get to spend a day in the brewhouse with the Free State brewers. I couldn't find a link to his story.... Perhaps someone could post it here for the enjoyment of us all

Life begins at 100. 100 IBUs, that is!

Probably from the same email you got:
We Have a Winner!
Congratulations to Nate Poell, winner of our “Brewer for a Day” writing contest. The entry, entitled “Brewers Triptych” caught the attention of our Judges and Nate will get to boot up and spend a day in the brewhouse with the Free State’s Brew Crew.
Re: FSB "Brewer for a Day"
Congrats, Nate!!!

Re: FSB "Brewer for a Day"
I really wanted to enter that contest myself. Glad to see another LBGer did. Hope we get to read it soon! Rock those boots and do us proud, Nate. Bravo.

This is Nate's winning entry. He entered several others that were also worthy, but I agree with the judges that this one is the best.
Nate has finagled to get me in on his brew day, so I will be his photo/videographer so that we can properly document this momentous occasion. They are not letting us design the beer, but in a few weeks, you can all try the new improved version (with extra hops and interstellar galactic love) of some beer to be made at the Free State soon:
"Pale ale recipe, net five gallons" (an acrostic)
6 pounds, two-row malt
3 pounds, Munich malt
6 ounces, Cascades
Mill grain;
Add 180-degree water to mash tun while
Stirring in malts;
Set timer for one hour;
Add water for sparging to kettle and start burner;
Coffee (drink some, ‘cause it’s too damn early);
Hour later, add sparge water while
Unscrewing tun spigot to run out wort;
Start boiling once there’s about seven gallons;
Enumerate 2 ounce of hops every thirty minutes,
Then add to boil;
Transfer to tank after chilling;
Stir in yeast and wait;
Siphon beer into secondary fermenter,
Taking a hydrometer sample as it flows;
Retch after tasting off-flavors in aforementioned sample;
Emote self-disgust as the whole batch is poured down the drain;
Eschew further homebrew plans after buying a keg from Free State;
Tap that sucker, pour a pint and be happy.

That's great. Well done!
Glad Nate was able to finagle you an invite, Joe. It will be good to have documentation! Can't wait to see videos/photos (and to try the beer, of course)

By popular demand, here is the full contest entry, followed by link to video clip featuring entrant's self-image:
BREWERS' TRIPTYCH
"Brewing Schematic" (a haiku)
Water + malt + hops + yeast
Tun -> kettle -> tank -> keg -> pint glass
Free State beer flavor!

There is some dam brewer named Bowersock
Who has water wheels grind his malt grain stock,
If copperheads near
His pint of stout beer
He hops ‘top a kettle and yells "Bock! Bock!"
