Butte roundup

OK, so the Butte roundup contains only one brewery. But you know, only one of those exists in Butte, so Image.

The Quarry
This place has been open for a few years, and seems to turn a pretty good business. Nice interior, live music. Free popcorn, and they're generous with it. The brewing setup is visible through windows. The beers weren't extraordinary but very solid. Here's what we had:
  • Epidote ESB: Seemed slightly darker than a typical ESB, more like a Bock. Nice malty base but not oversweet. Not particularly well hopped, but it seemed better for being that way. Clear as a bell. Would be a great session beer.
Gneiss IPA: Soft malt flavor, kind of a floral note somewhere in there. Decent enough hop backbone to it, but it's not aggressive at all. Very light in color, probably only 2-row.
Smokey Quartz Rauch: very deceptive looking, almost exactly like the IPA except crystal clear. Had a strong smoked flavor, but not a weird beef jerky taste like some rauchbiers have. Almost no malt flavor. Interesting, meaning that I'd probably have drank 4 oz. of it then moved onto something else.
Wish we could've stayed longer to try more, but we had to grab dinner. If you're in southwest Montana, the Berkeley Pit (on the edge of Butte) and this would be worth a side trip.
