April 2009

#1 Post by Lucile » Fri Apr 10, 2009 10:30 am

Lee presented Alts for the tasting – BJCP style 7. He presented three beers (plus a 4th that he didn’t have enough of to pass around). Of the three tasted by everyone:
Beer #1: the crowd agreed it was moderately malty, low bitterness – Pinkus organic alt, not very popular (a couple of people liked it)
Beer #2: possible mild butter/diacetyl flavor – some bitterness. - generally well liked. Brewed by Joe Yoder
Beer #3: nice malt, nice bitterness, well balanced – brewed by Dan Huetner (sp?) – well liked by the crowd

Seminar: Brick – Understanding the numbers associated with Grain Buys, including:
malt analysis / content
moisture content
yield
DBCG – dry analysis course grind
dextering units
protein
nitrogen ratios
Use the data to tweak recipe by single percentages. Jeff Jensen suggests creating small ratio (100 grains total, representing mash percentages), as a sample taste (chew to see what beer will likely taste like). Add or subtract grains to tweak flavor. Lee suggested using specific numbers from the grain bill when calculating with brewing software, to enter specific info about the grain used in the recipe.

Business Meeting
Ellen asked new people to introduce themselves:
Chris
Dan M – brewing 2 months. Knows Jeff Jensen.
Dan H – been a member 1.5 years, finally made it to a meeting. DjinKC on forum. Son is master brewer for Schlafly and (another Minnesota? brewery whose name I missed. Sorry.)
Mike C – just brewed first batch. And son.
Clean up crew: John Monaghan, Josh & Kendra, Mark C and Nichole (new people – thanks guys!).

Treasurer's report – Xan
Current bank balance: $6776.42, following most recent grain buy
Last year's treasurer's report has been signed off by the officers and is done.
Member's only list will be cleaned out this weekend – pay today or be gone!

Librarian – Devon
Had the crowd shout “Shame on you!” for Andrew Cooper and Will Lockwood, who need to return books but didn't even show up to the meeting.
Jeff Jensen returned his DVD in one month (in the allotted time). Also donated book to the library, excellent reference.
Jeff requested a new book: “Home town beer” for sale in the Boulevard gift shop. We should buy a copy (on the tour). Approved and passed.

Mayfest report - Sean
Mayfest will be May 2nd
If you are planning on brewing, be prepared to bring everything you need. Water and some electrical power will be available. Outlets are 120 volt, no 220.
Food: Guild will provide meat and some staples, but plan on bringing sides.
Jeff – Mayfest glasses have been ordered. Everyone who attends from the guild will get a glass. Any leftovers will be donated to UFL.
Jeff – discussion to purchase a new circus tent for the guild (the one from Free State we borrowed may not be available). Sean: cost ~ $500. Move to buy a new tent. Passed.

Boulevard Tour
Jeff – Sunday, 4/26 – tour of Boulevard starts at 4p.m. For Lawrence residents, meeting at 23rd Brewery at 3 p.m. Bus holds “a tight 48”. Beer allowed on the bus. No glass. We must clean up after ourselves.
Food: we may be able to grill out, unless no grills, Guild will provide some kind of food.
Tour will last 2.5-3 hours. Return to 23rd around 8 p.m.-ish.
There is no cost, but tips will be very much appreciated.
If you've signed up for a ride but cannot go or chose other route there, please post on the forum. Please also post on the forum if you're coming some other way (not by bus), so that they have a good headcount for the tour.
Dustin (guild member) will be our tour guide.

Other business
Ellen – please, when you bring beer, label it clearly so we know who you are – especially if you want feedback.
Move up September meeting so we've got more time between that month’s meeting and the weekend of Brewfest. Moved, passed.

September’s LBG meeting will be 9/3. Brewfest is 9/12.

Set up Brewfest committees: Food, Beer, Logistics and Entertainment (Joe Yoder – already taken care of). Want new faces.
Xan will head Logistics
Sean will head Food
Lee will head Beer
Ellen wants NEW FACES on the committees.

Chuck proposed a LBG-only brew competition. Any interest? Look for a thread on the forum.

Pints for Pets. Xan. She has postcards. May 30. Also see the Events thread on the Forum.

Tshirt designs for LBG. None submitted yet.

Bourbon barrel update. See Sean after the meeting

Lee – need to do Brewer of the Year. See forum. Awarded at Mayfest.

Anyone interested in wine/vintning? A few people interested. Wesley, Xan, Sean. Maybe a seminar.

BeerAmerica.tv – streaming video of beer/brewing interviews.
