October 2009

#1 Post by Lucile » Tue Oct 13, 2009 8:36 am

Tasting (thanks, Lee!): European Amber Lagers:
#1: Beer from Jack (well received, nicely done)
#2: Actually an amber ale from 23rd Street Brewery by way of Brick. The majority favorite.
#3: Sam Adams Octoberfest. Least-liked. Not to style.

Seminar: Chuck
Yeast propogation and Starters. [I took a bunch of meaningless notes - instead: Check with Devin and the Library for a copy Chuck's presentation, including all the formulas, details and references. It's good stuff.]

Business meeting:
New people: Kurt - welcome.

Clean up: Jim, Brick and Cindy – Thank you!

Treasurer's report:
We have some money. Expenses coming in from Brewfest. Current account balance is $4,492.75

Library report:
Shaming: Chris! Ted (Angler Ted)! Dan N.! Overdue books - bring them back.
Need a book? Talk to Devin.

Brewfest wrap up:
Kim wanted to pass along that her son who got burned from falling into a fire is doing great, thank you for everyone's help and support.
2010: Brewfest is reserved for Bloomington West for the last weekend (September 24th and 25th) of September – back to normal. Yeah, Xan, for putting Brewfest right with the world!
Left over glasses and coozies: cheap! Take them off our hands!

New Business:
Matt: introduced John from Kansas City Scottish Highland Games (http://www.kcscottishgames.org/): Want to have a beer competition. We need help from LBG: Is there interest? What kind of beers would we like to see? Can we get help from LBG? We need judges, help, input. Dates? June 11-13, 2010. Passed around a sing-in sheet.
Goal would be to do the judging before hand, then do the award presentation at the Games, along with brew demonstration.
Sean: To have a BJCP sanctioned event, need to have a national judge, and other sanctioned judges. Having the judging before is good – this is a problem we've had with Ren Fest.
John Monaghan: are you wanting to restrict the styles of beers? What scope do you want?
Sean: Style-specific competition is the trend, now.
Chris: judged at Irish fest. 15 judges, 50 entries. Suggest limiting it to a core of specific styles, will have trouble finding enough qualified judges.
Sean: we should do this. This is way better than Ren Fest – and they came to us a year in advance!
John M.: might want to consider a mead category.

2 more things:
Nominations for officers are in November. From the gallery: “Ellen for president!” “Yeah!”
Xan has been treasurer for 2 years, and she's DONE! Need someone who can handle Excel. Maybe some graphic design jobs.

Remember: December meeting is Christmas party (Saturday, December 12th) – no meeting in December.

Strong Ale Festival
John Monaghan: We are going to have a strong ale festival this (next) year. Don't know the exact details yet, probably March. Talk to John. Start small, get it on the calendar.
Sean: we should have a people's choice award.
Great idea.

Brick: October 17th at the Depot – My Retirement Party!

Meeting adjurned.
