April 2010

Tasting (Lee) – Tasting beers for recipe formulation – a continuation of last month's tasting seminar
For basic styles, check the BJCP guidelines for the style you’re interested in. (http://www.bjcp.org)
Things to consider: water (hard water in Kansas - filter? pH balance?), base malt, hops choice. Given the samples, how would you formulate these different styles of beer, what grains? what aroma hops? what bittering hops?
Beers sampled: (1) "Moose Drool" by Big Sky; (2) "Fat Tire" by New Belgium; (3) Sierra Nevada "Pale Ale"

No seminar this week, but an announcement/reminder:
23rd Street Brewery home brew competition – drop off two bottles by end of business Tuesday. Talk to Brick if you have questions. Entrants will receive their score/review sheets at the end of the competition.

New people – Welcome!
Doug – a friend/neighbor of Ken Godwin
Bobby – another friend/coworker of Ken Godwin
Tony Hayden – been brewing since I was 14

Cleanup crew:
Dale and Henry and Clark – thank you.

Officer Reports
Treasurer’s Report (Clint):
Current bank balance: $4568. No grain buy this last month, so not lots of activity.
A note about paid membership: a local brew supply shop (who offer discounts to members) said that people are still using last year’s membership cards. Please stop doing that. Pay up if you want to keep getting discounts and access to the "Members Only" section of the LBG forum, access to grain buys and keg buys, etc. Clint and Sean will be cleaning the forum membership in the near future.
Members paid for 2010: 81
Follow up to last month's raffle fundraiser for Blake: LBG raised $521 for him. Congrats, everyone.

Library Report (Devin):
We’ve got beer! And books. Talk to Devin if you want to borrow something (Remember: that’s members only!)
Suggestion from Laurie: we need to buy book on gardening for brewers. Seconded. Majority approved.

Upcoming Events
Mugs For Juggs VI: June 25th, 6pm (Friday). This will be the 6th annual! At Andy’s house. See the forum for more info and to donate kegs:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1991

Pints for Pets II: May 22nd, 3pm - 10pm (Saturday) – fund raiser for Humane Society at Clint and Xan's. See the forum and the web for more information and to donate:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1968 and http://www.700ohio.com/pintsforpets.shtml

May Fest on May 1st at Sean and Sherry’s – 2010 AHA Big Brew
Sean will run both smokers. Smoke a ton of brats, kraut. Bring a side – preferably something German-inspired – that would be nice. Sean encourages people to come out and brew. We have electricity, water (by garden hose – bring a filter!).
Camping is encouraged! Be sure to prepare for rain: it ALWAYS RAINS ON MAYFEST. If it does, come down to the basement – where there’s beer.
For info on this year's Big Brew recipe (but of course you can brew whatever you want):

And on the forum at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1982

New Business:
Devin’s going to organize a keg buy – used kegs, under $30 including seals and shipping. Ball locks. Check the forum. Closing soon.
viewtopic.php?f=17&t=1960

Clint has left over 2008 RenFest tasting glasses. They’re $1 each, or 2 for $1 – Clint needs to get them out of his garage.

Andy is hosting the club imperial stout brew at his place, April 24th. Come out and watch folks brew 60 gallons of beer - even if you didn’t get a chance to get in on the brew.

Rob – about the grain buy: Should the club be paying sales tax on grain? Well, it’s up to the individual to report the purchase on your own Kansas income taxes.

Wendy – April 24th - Parkville BrewFest
KC Beer Fest at the Legends, Saturday October 16th, $25

Jensen Brew Tour? Did that die? Nominate Joe Yoder to organize it. Jeff will follow up.

Move to adjourn. Seconded. Passed.
