May 2010

Seminar: Brick – hop information, hop utilization, bittering, aroma, etc.
Next month’s seminar will be grain tasting.

New members
A couple new members – found us through the forum. Welcome.

Clean-up crew?
Steve, Chuck, George – Thanks, guys

Treasurer’s report – Clint
About $3900 in the bank. We bought kegs and grain this month so it’s been busy. We’ve been working on payments using PayPal for receiving grain/keg buy payments – with a method to charge the transfer fees to the buyer, rather than having the club suck up the cost (which is the default behavior). The “how-to” should be on the forum.

Librarian – Devin
New book – “The Brewer’s Garden” – you can check it out when Laurie’s done with it. Other books are also available, of course.

Old Business
Thanks to Sean and Sherry for hosting MayFest! Yeah! It was a great event.
Do we want get a reservation for Bloomington next year? Sean says: as long as you guys clean up Sherry’s house like you did this year, then we can keep having it at the house each year.
Monaghan: we should reserve Bloomington anyway. Xan/Clint will look into Bloomington.

Pints for Pets
Party is 3p.m., May 22nd. You can drop off kegs Friday after work, or when you show up on Saturday. Check with Xan if you don’t know about this. Remember: it’s a fundraiser for Lawrence Humane Society.

Muggs for Juggs
Go Kim – another year of walking 60 miles for breast cancer – and raising money for research. It’s June 25th – a Friday night this year. They’ve just got a band reserved. Plan on beer donations – check with Andy (and the forum) for committing to beer donations. There will be KB barbecue

Brewfest
Need to start thinking about committees and planning, especially food. Sean is not going to do it this year! (But he will be happy to help/guide/advise.) Brewfest is September 24-26th. Need to work now to get a barbecue team to commit to that weekend (before they get booked up). If anyone’s interested in doing food, need to commit now and get that ball rolling.
Sean – if you get a jump on it now, it doesn’t seem like such a chore, but if you wait until later, it really becomes a problem.
If you’ve been a committee head before and want to do it again, please step up and volunteer. Check the Brewfest section on the forum.

Christmas Party
Same thing as Brewfest – gotta get on this, too. Do we want to do the same thing as last year?
Sean – we should look into Stoney Point (where Monaghan and Glenn both had weddings, recently). They’re offering it to us for $200 (it’s their off season). They have a walk-in cooler for the beer and one of the owners loves homebrew. It’s a great location in terms of size and function. Con: it’s way out there for the rest of us (near Vinland Valley nursery on Dg Co 460). Lisa – we should look into car pooling or a van service, as it’s so much cheaper than the Train Depot (was about $400 last year).
Motion to have the party at December 11th – motion for Xmas party, with amendment for having Wendy look into getting a party bus set so we can carpool from somewhere in Lawrence. Seconded, passed.

Followup to MayFest – Clint checked, the first weekend in May at Bloomington is already booked. Motion to have it at Sherry and Sean’s (with the caveat that Sherry may nix it). Passed.

Brewer of the Year award – check the forum.
Discussion: should former winners be able to get the award again? Discussion – a lot of potential nominees have already won, and the bylaws say they can’t be nominated again. Motion to wait 5 years before being allowed to be nominated again? Yes. Seconded, passed.

Announcements/New Business
Xan –
Angler’s is having cheap pints night on Thursdays.
Also, first Wednesdays will be women only in the Oyster Bar. 6:30 – 8 p.m. first Wednesday of every month, starting June 2nd. Hope to see the women there to talk beer have a nice evening.

Guest announcement: Jay from Topeka Hall of Foamers. Bad Beer clinic – in order to make good beer, you sometimes need to make bad beer. Invite: June 12th at 9am at Blind Tiger. $15. If interested – see Jay (at the meeting).

Brick – We’ve got the 23rd Street Brewery contest bottles and judging sheets. Great contest. Chuck won, two other members placed. Chuck’s beer will be brewed at the brewery later this year.

Last grain buy is done – pay up! There’ll be another one in a month.

Dale – motion to adjourn. Seconded. Passed.
Lisa Hallberg

Thanks for the warm welcome at my first monthly meeting. Really enjoyed myself and will try to post a little rather than just being a lurker. ;)
