August 2010

#1 Post by Lucile » Fri Aug 13, 2010 5:58 am

It's a crazy hot day today with the temp above 100 degrees for the fifth day in a row, and the meeting hall is HOT. There are a ton of people here. As luck would have it, Lee had work obligations and Brick didn't put together a seminar, so we can get straight on to business. Let’s get ‘er done.

New people:
Logan - moved here from St. Louis
Emily - friend of Jack, LBG is "my kind people"
Jason - works with Jack
Matt - friend of Tucker
[I missed one other name in there. Sorry about that.]

Clean up crew - thanks, guys!
Jim, Chuck and Ian

Treasurer's Report - Clint:
We've got about $4400. We're ready for Brewfest.

Librarian's Report - Devon:
We have books. Check the web site. Lots of voting for new books. We voted last month to buy the new book on "Pale Ales" - that will get ordered with this month's books.
"Brewing Classing Styles"
"Brewing With Wheat"
"Farmhouse Ales"
"Wild Brews"
"Yeast: The Practical Guide to Beer Fermentation"
Motion to purchase them all. Approved. Devon will order those.

BREWFEST COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Beer and Beverage Committee - Jason
Beer donation form is online, it's great, it's easy. You can fill out the form and make your beer commitment here tonight.
Request for equipment: last year we got tents. This year, we should buy beverage equipment:
2 10-gallon water coolers (approx $55 each)
Troughs. The club only owns one. They're about $105 each - the rubber ones have a bung in the bottom to let out the water.
3 CO2 regulators - $45/$50 each
Suggestion for handling the pin-lock/ball-lock problem - create hoses with a "hydra-head" solution with both a pin and a ball connector at the end. Contraption costs about
Already approved: buy a tool kit
Comment from Sean B: suggest getting metal trough instead of plastic, because the kegs fit better. Also, Sean is willing to donate/provide one.
Discussion: we just need to buy a small trough for soda. Also, one 6-foot needed for donated commercial kegs.
Jason: we should buy these (appropriate style troughs) so we don't have to deal with it again
Decision: we should buy one 4-foot and one 6-foot.
Ted: I may be able to get you regulators. Discussion: We'll buy some anyway.
Motion to buy everything as discussed. Passed.

Reefer trucks: the one we've got will be small, and we may need an extra for room for everything - beer and food.
Jeff: suggest we do more research and bring the reefer problem up at September meeting.
Xan: motion to let the officers to make a decision before then and deal with it as appropriate. Passed.

Food Committee - Brick
After all the research, KB barbecue is the best deal. And we know we can rely on them.
Friday night: Shrimp boil. Ted has offered to buy good Shrimp at cost.
Discussion: we should get a vote going on the forum to gage interest and figure out how to pre-pay.
23rd Street will buy all our food at cost and store it for us at the Brewery.
Need people to volunteer to help with food prep - we need enough people, and not just a couple of working all freaking day.
Everyone needs to sign up on the forum and help out a little so we can all have a good time.
Sean: if we don't all help out, I will ridicule you.
Also, there will be signups for side-dishes.
The only food Saturday morning will be coffee - plan on doing your own.

Logistics Committee - Tucker
We've met and pretty much everything is getting sorted out. Need to work with Food committee to coordinate purchases and needs.
Going to buy rope lights, water hoses, rather than borrow. Total will be less $100. Motion and passed to purchase.
Everyone is responsible for helping out - sign up on the forum! Clean up, serving, food prep, gate duty.
Sale permit for the lake - Xan will help with that.

Tickets - Clint
Tickets: on sale after the meeting for those who've committed kegs.
Ticket purchase for first round will be open for a couple days after the meeting (to accommodate the new online form). Contact Clint directly if you are going to be late committing a keg.
There will be a second round in September if there are any tickets left over.

Music Committee - Joe
We have all the bands booked. There's another issue - a band that was there last year (they played for free because they were in town with another band) wants to come again after the bands were all booked. (Labretta Suede from New Zealand – see the music committee discussion for more info: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=2146)
They offered to fly out from New York, but all the money for music has been committed. Can we vote to offer them a set amount and they can take it or leave it. Joe suggests $250.
Vote: the majority of those voting are for the proposal, though a few against having them there for $250. The vote overall is lukewarm on the whole topic.

Ellen: thanks to all the committee chairs! Way to have some new people (Jason, Tucker and Brick, especially) take up these responsibilities.

New business:
Jeff: We need a public relations person to work with Praxair.
We have a Praxair rep/vendor guy HERE AT THE MEETING RIGHT NOW! Wow.
Jeff: we need to formalize our relationship with the gas suppliers and try and get a discount with membership card.
Praxair rep: we'll honor a discount at both Lawrence and Topeka. Make sure you show your card.
Jeff: I think the club should have a formal offer/arrangement with businesses in region, create a more official agreement, better face for the club.
to create a PR person for the club.
We'll put something on the forum to add to the September meeting.

Brewer of the Year Award:
We should table that until October. It's too freaking hot!
Maybe we'll just skip this year.

Magazine interview:
"Bites of Lawrence" - we were contacted for a potential interview for a new magazine.
Check the forum if you're interested in helping out with an interview: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=772&start=30

Sean: FSB pellet hops are still available.

Motion to adjurn. Passed.
Lisa Hallberg
Hacker, crafter, cook, bicyclist, work in progress, human.
