LBG Minutes – April 2011

Tasting
This month’s tasting featured American Wheats. These generally run 4-5 ½ %ABV, and have less than 20 IBUs. The grain bill is pretty straightforward; 50-60% wheat and 40-50% two-row, with some variations using a small percentage of flaked wheat or related adjuncts. American Wheats are light and refreshing with less character input from yeast than German wheats. A clean American strain, such as Wyeast 1010, is appropriate to the category. Hop selection could be Nobel for a spicy and more traditional accent, or an American variety for citrusy notes.
The three samples were:
1) Widmer Hefeweizen, 4.7%, 30IBU.
2) Odell Easy Street Wheat, 4.6%, 15IBU.
3) Tallgrass Halcyon Unfiltered Wheat, 5%, 20IBU.

Seminar
Members had a much needed introduction session, so everyone had a chance to link names and forum handles to faces. Using our real names when requesting materials from the librarian and QM is necessary for clear communication. In general, it might help to use a real name in our signature lines when posting, too.

Tasting budget raised from $30 to $50 monthly.

Bring some food to the meetings!! There used to be some sort of system, such as coordinating certain months with last name initial, or even/odd birth month brings food in even/odd months.
New system: if you have a last name or a birthday, bring some food to the meetings!! (Please.) It's a good idea to have some snacks while sampling - they help change/reset the palate between beverages; they can complement or contrast a beverage to enhance aromas, flavors, and the general hedonic experience of connoisseurship; and, oh yeah, many of us drive after the meeting. A little responsibility is a good thing.

Life begins at 100. 100 IBUs, that is!
