Apparently forgot to post this last month - Sorry.

LBG Minutes – June 2011

Tasting
This month’s tasting featured single-hop IPAs. We sampled Sam Adams Latitude 48 IPA, which was available as a special issue in 12-packs. There were five varieties of hops in Latitude 48, so a 12-er had two bottles using each variety as single-hop plus two bottles of the final beer. It was a great opportunity to try Hallertau Mittelfrüh, East Kent Goldings, Ahtanum, Simcoe, and CTZ (Columbus/Tomahawk/Zeus) against the same malt bill. There were some questions, such as how comparable the IBUs might have been among the varieties.

Seminar
Andy gave a seminar on yeast propagation for starters. Some tips were to use a 1.040 wort, build the yeast cake slowly instead of all at once until you have about two liters of starter per five gallons, and canning starter wort to save time. Cold-crash the starter and decant most of the liquid before pitch.
