They have 100 20# CO2 cylinders, mix of steel and aluminum assembly, some 5# cylinders, asking $95 for steel cylinders and $110 for aluminum, tanks tested and nearly full. Rob is willing to act as a delegate and purchase in quantity. If you are interested, please see Rob.

Brewfest Logo Recieves National Honors
For those of you who had the pleasure of attending the 1999 BrewFest, you might still have your commemorative beer glass. Well, take a look again at the glass. The design for the glass was recently selected to appear in the upcoming Print Regional Design Annual 2000 due out in September.

This national design magazine features work done in the United States during the past year. Accepted work is presented by geographic location. Our logo will be displayed in the Midwest section. The Annual has been around since the early '80s and is regularly refered to as the "graphics bible" by those in the industry. This year, over 32,000 entries were submitted. Historically, they accept 10 - 15% of those entries.

LBG on Cable?

Lawrence's very own Sunflower Cable cooking show, Guided by Flavor, is interested in doing a segment on brewing beer. If the club is willing to donate the ingredients and someone is willing to lend the equipment, the LBG would get the credit. The potential is there to edumucate some folks on the ease and fun of homebrewing, and perhaps we could go so far as to attract some new members. Thoughts anyone?

International World Beer Cup
The 75th St. Brewery won the gold medal for its Red Eye Rye in the World Beer Cup competition in Category 13: American Style Rye Ale or Lager

November Meeting Possibilities
I am trying to arrange for a seminar/meeting at the Free State Brewery in November. Thursday nights are tough for Steve Bracht. Is there a better night for everyone?

Any particular topic that you would like Steve to talk about? I assumed that a tour like last year was probably not what people wanted.

Cooking With Beer
Brown Ale Barbecue Sauce

This sauce came from a recipe for ribs. I think it was from Avery Brewing in Colorado, because it called for Ellie's Brown Ale. I used Pony Express. I would make this the day before I wanted to use it, so it would be a little thicker.

Makes 1 Quart

1/4 Cup butter, olive, or other vegetable oil
1 large onion, finely chopped
6 cloves garlic, minced and mashed with 1 teaspoon salt
1 cup pitted plums, fresh or canned, or whole cranberry sauce
12 ounces tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes in puree
12 ounces Ellie's Brown Ale
2 large or 4 small beef or chicken bouillon cubes
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon bottled liquid smoke
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon each ginger, cayenne, crushed coriander seed, black pepper, cumin seed, and mustard seed

In a small skillet melt butter and saute onion on medium-low until limp and translucent. Add garlic and continue to cook, stirring occasionally until onion is limp, set aside. In a blender or food processor, puree plums and tomato sauce until smooth. In a 3-quart pan heat beer to medium simmer and add bouillon cubes, stirring until dissolved. Add vinegar, liquid smoke, brown sugar, spices, sauted onion, and plum-tomato mixture. Bring to a slow simmer and cook, stirring frequently, until very thick, 45 min. to 1 hr. Mild Chosen Best Beer in Britain
Moorhouse's Black Cat was honored Tuesday as the best beer in Britain during judging by brewers, beer writers and journalists at the Great British Beer Festival in London. The mild beer is described in the 2000 Good Beer Guide as, "A smooth, well-balanced dark mild with a fruity aroma. Chocolate and coffee flavours complement the bitter roast character that lingers on into the aftertaste."

The Burnley brewed mild was chosen as the overall winner from over 30 finalists in five categories including beers from tiny micros to major national brewers.

"This is only the third time a mild has won the most prestigious beer competition in the world, the last time being twenty years ago," said Mike Benner, Head of Campaigns and Communications. "At a time when many brewers are dropping their milds claiming drinkers don't want them, this marks a real achievement for Moorhouses and promises to turn the mild market around."

Malcolm MacDonald from Moorhouse's said: "It's a tremendous achievement for us all. It proves that a mild style beer is still in demand with today's drinkers."

The Silver award went to 'TEA' from Hogs Back Brewery in Tongham, Surrey. The Bronze went to Yorkshire Terrier Bitter from York Brewery.
