LBG Minutes – October 2012

Business Meeting
New people – Jamal, Dustin. Welcome!

Clean-up was by Frank, Bowe, Christen and many more. Thanks!

Tuck provided the Brewfest Recap: apparently about thirty people survived to attend the October meeting….

Librarian – Jeff went over check-out procedures; we acquired a new book.

Treasurer – balance is about $8300.

Elections are coming up! Nominations for officers are next month. Treasurer may roll over another year, all other offices must be elected. Elections are in January.

The LBG Christmas party is December 8 @ the Train Depot, roughly 6pm to Midnight. Bring beer. Bring Sides. There will be a beer exchange(!) – see forum for details.

Frank reported on the new grain buy, and noted that there is info for bulk hop buying on the forum. Please stay current as we’ll be ordering as soon as varieties are posted.

The keg buy order has been made. To expedite the process so we didn’t miss out again, the payment has already been made. Please be prepared to pay as soon as we get the total! It will be roughly $30/keg, perhaps slightly more.

Matt is seeking beta-testers for his new brewing website related to beer, coffee, and teas. Please send him a PM and help him out!

No December meeting.

Seminar
No seminar this month.

Tasting
This month’s tasting featured Pumpkin beers. It’s a ‘Merkin beer, category 21A. (Funny enough, for an uniquely American beer, they usually use English hops and yeast….) It’s key not to overcarb. We had three examples:

1) Mr. Pumpkin by Mother’s Brewing Company, Springfield, MO. 5%; 10 IBU; pale, crystal 35, touch of roast; roast pumpkin and spices.
2) Angelo’s! 6.5% (1.065 – 1.016); 19 IBU; Maris Otter, aromatic, caramunich; Fuggles; pumpkin in the boil; vanilla, spices.
3) Pumking by Southern Tier Brewing Company, Lakewood, NY. 8.6% (19P); pale, caramel; Magnum and Sterling.

Upcoming events:
*November meeting – officer nominations.
*Christmas party @ Train Depot, Dec. 8.
*January meeting – elections.
*Great Nebraska Beer Fest – next August.
**Watch for a new brewery/brewpub in Emporia called Radius!

Thanks to everyone who brought snacks!
Life begins at 100. 100 IBUs, that is!
