Meeting Minutes for the August, 10th meeting held at The Unitarian Fellowship.

August Seminar

Andy did a demo on the basics of kegging. He explained that he gets a perfect level of carbonation by first chilling his beer down to around 38 degrees, then transferring to keg, and pressurizing through the liquid dip tube at 22 PSI for 24 to 30 hours. Pressurizing through the liquid dip tube allows the CO2 to bubble up through the beer from the bottom of the keg, which in turn allows the beer to absorb it faster. Some people choose to carbonate using ?head pressure? or pressurizing through the gas inlet. With this method Andy suggested using a higher PSI of 30 to 40, and expecting it to take 30+ hours. The beer should still be chilled first to prevent even longer carbonation times. CO2 dissolves in liquid easier at lower temperatures. Andy also noted that it is important to not swap gas connectors (grey) and beer connectors (black) on ball lock kegs, as they can get stuck on pretty badly if used on the incorrect inlet. Andy explained that pin lock kegs will also work well for kegging, but are a less popular option. The LBG has used ball lock kegs available to members for $15. Successful carbonation can be achieved in a keg using priming sugar. However, after adding the priming sugar, a few pounds of pressure should still be added in order to seal the keg. Carbonation from priming sugar forms slowly enough that it may not seal the keg, and instead just leak out around the seals.

Thank you to Andy for providing this helpful information. Please remember to pull off two bottles from each keg that is donated to Brewfest to be entered into the Renfest Competition.

Business Meeting

Cleanup
Ian and Seth volunteered for cleanup

The business meting started with Sean bringing up the communication problems experienced in the last few meetings. He requested that the membership make an effort to not overtalk each other. Please respect each other and request the floor instead of interrupting. This will become even more important as the guild continues to grow its membership.

Membership currently stands at 60 members.

Any member attending Brewfest needs to signup for 30 minutes of bartending or barbacking. A signup sheet was available at the meeting. Please contact Sean if you have not yet signed up for a time slot.

Competition
A group of LBG members met at the festival to meet Rodger and see the competition site.
The site is a gazebo next to the jousting ring, and looks like it is going to work out really well. The renfest staff will provide, water, ice, power, chairs and tables. We will be able to do a demonstration at the fairgrounds. According to Rodger we will also be allowed to serve homebrew at the festival. However we will be serving it under their blanket license, which requires that we charge for the beer. This raised some legal concerns among a few members. It will be discussed further by the committee.

All members are encouraged to enter the competition and to attend. It will be a great opportunity to taste, and learn about judging. Entries are $2 for each 2 bottle entry. Entry fees for the competition will be waived for all LBG entrants. Festival fees will be waived for all entrants. Rodger was kind enough to give the guild 40 tickets for the festival, and also stated that all LBG members would be allowed to enter through the VIP entrance free of charge during the competition.

Officer Changes

Pete has stepped down from treasurer due to a move. Pete will still be around when he can be, but felt he would no longer be able to fulfill the Treasurer duties. Thanks to Pete for his work as the Treasurer up until this point, and good luck in the new home. The officers proposed that Joe Yoder move from the position of Secretary to Treasurer, and that John Monaghan take over the position of Secretary. Membership voted, and the move was approved.

Business cards
Business cards were made by Matt and were available at the meeting. We are already running low, and need to print more. It was proposed by Sean that we use the new banner design as the new business cards. Membership approved.

Banner

Matt came up with 2 designs for a LBG banner. One was white on black, and one was black on white. The membership voted, and The black on white banner was approved. Matt and Jarrell have gotten estimates. It was decided that we will use a local merchant. Matt will get the design to the print house, and will have the banner printed in time for the Mass Beverage Demo.

Mass Beverage Demo

We will have water. We will not have electrical. Dennis volunteered to loan a generator. Sean volunteered to loan his propane rings. Andy will be bringing his brewing rig, and Jarrell has volunteered to donate an all grain recipe for it. Doug at Ale&Vino will be donating a few beer kits for us to brew, and raffle off. It was proposed that the beer brewed be donated to Brewfest. Mass Beverage may have catering, but it is still up in the air. Sean has offered to bring out a tent, and Shane will be bringing a large shop fan. The Guild will be paying for propane, and fuel for the generator.
