Tasting

This month’s tasting featured Red Ales.

Style Guideline: Falls under the American Amber style, though it is a variation; should have a strong malt character, moderate malt sweetness, but what distinguishes this “substyle” is that it should be hop-forward and not just evenly balanced.
Amber Ale BJCP-typical OG 1.045-1.065, IBU :25-40+, SRM: 10-17.

Five examples:

1)Green Flash Hop Head Ale

ABV:7%
IBU:70
Described as a “Red IPA”
Hops:Columbus, Nugget, “bucket loads” of Amarillo
-From the website-“Reinous hop characteristics emerge from an enormous hopping with Columbus, Nugget, and Amarillo overtaking the rich caramel malt base. To add luscious hop flavors and enticingly floral hop aromas, we dry-hop the brew with bucket loads of Amarillo hops. Welcome to the world of Red IPA.”
Tasting Notes:
Flavor- caramely, sweet but not cloying; somewhat biting bitterness, not mellow at all.
Aroma- fruity, citrusy, grapefruit

2) Amber Ale or ESB (Matt Parker)
OG:1.057
FG:1.026
IBU:37
ABV: ?
Recipe Notes:
Hops-Chinook (bittering), Fuggles, and Kent Goldings.
Grain Bill: Domestic 2-row (88%), Crystal (5%), and Wheat (4%)
Tasting Notes:
This is more akin to an amber ale, which is okay because it shows contrast
½ finger head, cream colored, bubbly
Sweet-Malty flavor, hints of caramel, mildly hoppy
Light body, low carbonation
Sweet finish

3)D’s Red Ale (Duane Buscher)
OG:1.057
ABV:6.5%
IBU:66
Recipe Notes:
Hops-Horizon (bittering), Centennial, Cascade, and Galaxy (knockout and dry-hopped).
Grain Bill-British Pale (74%), Munich (6%), Crystal 45 (6%), Crystal 120 (3%), Victory (3%), Pale Chocolate 200L (3oz. or about 1%)
Tasting Notes:
Flavor- Somewhat sharp, yet restrained bitterness; slight caramel flavor, good full body, finishes dry and clean, almost too clean.
Aroma- Citrusy, pineapple, maybe mango.

4)Flint Hills Red v3 Imperial IPA (J&T Brews)
OG:1.104
FG:1.016
ABV:11.8%
IBU: 101
Recipe Notes:
Hops-Northern Brewer, Centennial, Cascade, Simcoe, Safale American, Amarillo Gold.
Grain Bill-Pale Malt, Maris Otter (72%), Munich (19%), Caramel 6 row (4%), Victory (4%), Carmal/Crystal (1%)

5)Bear Republic Hop Rocket-
ABV: 6.8%
IBU:67
From the website-“Red Rocket Ale is a bastardized Scottish style red ales that traces its origin to our homebrew roots. This full bodied and hoppy brew finishes on the palate with sweet , caramel malt flavors.”
Tasting notes:
Flavor: Dark Fruit, plum, dried fig, caramel, barley wine like
Aroma: Floral, citrusy hoppiness
Mouthfeel: Medium to heavy body, but not overly thick and cloying.

Voted LBG favorite: #3 D’s Red Ale (Duane Buscher)
