Announcements

March, 2002: First Annual LBG Club-only Competition. The style is American pale ale. More details forthcoming!

Minutes of the September meeting
Cleanup Crew: Jim & Brian
Attendance: What they brought:
Ben Johnson New Belgium cherry ale
Ellen Jensen
Ken Godwin
Brian Hanks sparkling ginger mead
Jeff Jensen pale ale
Joe Yoder pale ale -- America's Best Beer
Xanthippe Stevens
Rob Dewhirst
Doug Holub
Pete Clouston pale ale & Altbier
Jim Dick
Christina Bolas

Rich Deviney

Barry Fitzgerald
cherry ale
Glenn Hudspeth
Altbier 1 & Altbier 2

Apologies to anyone who got left off of the list, but it means YOU didn't sign the list at the meeting!

Treasurer's Report: Barry reports we have a balance of $231.17 in the LBG account.

Librarian's Report: Rich reports we have new books, a new (sorta) suitcase in which to carry them, and he will even deliver to your house.

Future Brewfest Plans: Rich talked with the previous band and they have raised their rates to $500, but will cut us a deal and do it for $400. The LBG vote "hell no." Jeff believes he can find us a new band. LBG votes for June 1, 2002, as the preferred date for the next Brewfest, with June 8 as a backup.

Halloween Party! on October 27 at Xan's & Rob's. There will be a bonfire. Can be a slumber party if necessary (probably will be). There are two roasts left over from Brewfest that can be grilled. Dale regrets he won't be able to make it. Jeff has plenty of pheasant and venison also. Everyone bring a side-dish. There's a map to Xan's & Rob's on the Hairy Dog Brewery site. If we have a costume party, then Barry automatically wins first prize.

Greetings from Max Maximov from D?sseldorf, Germany, are related by Glenn. LBG responds in kind ("Please send beer!").

LBG Club-only Competition in March, 2002. Joe, Pete, Jeff & Ellen are the competition planning committee.

Future Seminars: Rob volunteers to lead a discussion of RIMs in October. Jeff offers to find volunteers for future seminars.

Rob can get 8 & 16 bbl dairy tanks for a good price if anyone is interested. Tanks located in Wichita.

Doug Holub is still getting the bank statements. The names / addresses on the LBG account need to be changed.

Biermeister for next month are Ken and Dale, due to Pete's impending absence.

Everyone's favorite topic, kegging, was also addressed. Some of the things discussed were: remedies for leaking pressure-relief valves; some people recommend pressurizing your kegs when empty; pressurizing the keg with 5 psi to seal the top when priming a keg with corn sugar; and availability of separate gauges to monitor the keg pressure during storage.

Blind tastings: German Ales's
Home-brew example: Pete and Glenn both brought Altbier! Glenn split a 10-gal batch into two carboys and into one pitched the WYeast K?lsch strain and into the other the White Labs German ale/K?lsch strain. There was surprisingly little difference between the two. Not enough for people to unequivocally decided that they liked one over the other.

Commercial examples:

Goose Island-Summertime Ale

Pete: "Good summer beer."
Rob: "Very refreshing."
Joe: "Like it."
Ellen & Brian: "Clean & light."
Dale: "Rambunctious."
Ken: "Light, O.K."
Jeff: "Had better K?lsch's. Thought it was supposed to be a clean style."
Doug: "Refreshing."

Pinkus M?nster Alt

Brian: "Wet German shepherd."
Ellen: "Asparagus and other vegetables."
Ken: "Salad."
Jeff: "Metallic in the finish after a sweet taste at first."
Dale: "Not overly offensive."
Rob: "Last half of taste is non-beerlike."
