Membership Dues: It's a new year and time to pay your membership dues again. Individual memberships are $16 and family memberships are $24. Your dues go to pay for our meeting place at the ECM as well as the BrewFest.

New Faces: It was good to see a lot of new faces at the January meeting. Jeff was kind enough to give a little background about the club and the advantages of membership, such as the library and yeast bank. Some of our new members/visitors told us about how they found out about the Guild and what they were brewing.

Old Business
Contest: Jeff says the judges are lined up. They will be mixture of professional brewers as well as certified judges. We discussed whether we wanted our members to judge the beers but decided to keep impartial judges.

BrewFest: Our preferred shelter is rented. The date is set for June 1st. Joe is contacting Blue Stem to see if they are available.

Yeast Bank: Doug said that yeast is still available from the Yeast Bank. Not many people have taken advantage of this resource lately, but he would be happy to grow up a starter for you. If you are getting ready to brew with a strain that he doesn't have, he would like to get a sample.

New Business
Seminars: Jeff has some seminar ideas for this year. Jeff was approached by a mycology (mushrooms) club about an exchange of seminars as a way to get people interested in our respective clubs. Another seminar idea concerned gadgets. The concept was to have everyone bring in their favorite brewing gadget for discussion.

Monthly Tasting: Beers of Ommegang
Brewery Ommegang, located in Cooperstown, New York is dedicated to producing all bottle-conditioned Belgian style ales. They brew three beers that are available in 750 ml corked bottles or four packs of 12 oz bottles.

The first beer we tasted the Ommegang Abbey Ale (8.5% alc/vol), their flagship beer in the Dubbel style.

"Horsey" - Ben
"Nice and fresh" - Dwight
"Doesn't have that yeast twang" - Joe
"Wine-like, apple aromaa" - Rob

The second beer was Rare Vos (6.5% alc/vol) which they describe as a Brabant-style Belgian Ale.

"Winey" - Dwight
"Spritzy" - Dale
"Better blend of fruit and sweetness" - Barry

Notes from the Competition Committee Meeting
The Competition Committee (Joe Yoder, Ellen & Jeff Jensen, and Pete Clouston) met back on October 14th. We tried to keep costs down, and we also tried to have the competition pay for itself.

Logistics

* The Date of judging tentatively is set for Sunday, March 24. We are working on a place and will let you know more as we find out information.
* The tentative window for entries is Thursday, March 14 (brew club meeting) through Sunday, March 17.
* Jeff and Ellen volunteered to keep the beers until judge date, so folks can drop the entries off at the meeting, at Jensen Liquor (620 W. 9th St.) or at our house (3024 Yellowstone Drive) from Thursday, March 14 through Sunday, March 17. (These dates are subject to change, pending confirmation of judging location, judges, etc.)
* We have decided to keep this first competition to our own membership to practice and see how things work out. Future competitions may be open to regional beer clubs or even national entries.

Packaging

* For each entry, you must submiit three 12-oz. plain bottles (no labels or other markings on bottles or caps).
* An entry form with name and address should be attached by rubberband with each bottle (Pete says we can get these off of the Internet. Forms will be available by early 2002.)
* $5 per entry (This is about as low as we could go. It definitely will not make the club any money and will barely cover expenses)

Judges

* Judging will be based on the BJCP guidelines for American Pale Ale. Competition committee will make sure everybody that is interested has this information by the November meeting. Anybody needing this information earlier should contact one of the committee members (Ellen, Jeff, Joe, Pete).
* The committee is contacting potential judges. They may not all be BJCP certified (although some probably will be), but the judges all will be beer-savvy "industry experts." They will not be members of our club and, therefore, will provide impartial input.
* Judges will use BJCP scoring sheets. I have copies of these, and they also can be found on the Internet.
* The score sheets will be mailed out to participants following the competition.

Prizes

* The club will award 1st-, 2nd- and 3rd-place prizes. The winner of 1st prize will receive 1# of hops plus a first-place ribbon; the 2nd place winner will receive four brewfest glasses plus a second-place ribbon; the 3rd-place entry will receive a third-place ribbon.

Compensation

* The plan is to compensate judges for their time and effort by giving each a 25 oz. Belgium/Lambic as a token gift.

Expenses

We estimate:

* $15 - hops for first prize
* $15 - ribbons (with type saying something to the effect of 1st LBG, 1st Place, American Pale Ale, etc.)
* $5-$10 for clear plastic cups for judges
* $30-$35 for gift beers for judges

We also will need pitchers to serve beers, which we hope to borrow for free.
