LBG Minutes – July 2013

Business Meeting

New people – Duane Chapman
Clean-up – Ed and Charlie. Thank you!

Librarian (Christen) – An LBG cookbook is in the works. Twenty recipes for the LBG cookbook have been received so far. Please send your food recipes for spent grains or cooking beer to Christen (Ophelia) on the forum or post it on the forum by August 31. Recipes should be tried first before recommending. If you have suggestions for the “pairs well with” section for your recipe, please include that information as well. The books will be spiral bound with plastic pages and cost $4.99 for the 100-page book. Get your recipes in by August 31.

New Books:
Beer, Food & Flavor, A guide to tasty pairings and the culture of craft beer, by Schuyler Schultz.
If you have any ideas for new books, please let Christen know.

Treasurer (Clint Wedel for Ken) – LBG has $9100. Last day to purchase a membership is July 11, 2013. You have to have a membership for Brewfest. Going forward, the Treasurer will not be accepting member applications/money during the business meeting due to the disruptions this causes. If you need to talk to the Treasurer, please do so before or after the business-meeting portion.
Membership Dues:
Individual = $20
Family = $30
Check the forum in the Members Only section for the 2013 Membership Dues information.
**Only paid members will have access to the Members-Only section of the forum and the right to vote on LBG business.

Secretary – Suzanne McAlister will take over the Secretary position from Caryl Hale.

Biermeister – (Duane) – Thank you to everyone that has donated beer or ingredients for the monthly tastings. Your donation has not been forgotten and you will be compensated.

Quartermaster – (Andy) – LBG has a trailer full of equipment/party supplies that LBG members can checkout. Use the calendar on the forum if you wish to reserve the equipment. (Board index » Members Only Area » Library » Equipment). There are pictures of the equipment, tents and jockeyboxes on the forum as well.
New Business

Home brewing is now legal in all 50 states.

Website – The new website is up and running now – http://www.lawrencebrewers.org. If you have any LBG related pictures or content appropriate for the new website, please put those items on the Lawrence Brewer’s Guild Facebook page, or email the content to lawrencebrewers@gmail.com. Many thanks to Courtney Servaes for designing the website, JenaLea Myers for adding the content (and reading through all the past meeting minutes and newsletters!), Sean Belden, Frank Dillon, and anyone else that helped out with the website project.

LBG has stickers! Purchase them at the meeting for $1/each or 3 for $2.

Andy and Kim Booth thanked everyone that helped make Mugs for Jugs such a great success. The beer and food were outstanding. They raised $4500 this year!

Keg Buy - Kyle MacMillan (unclek) is in charge of the bulk keg buy. He has 51 ball lock kegs on hand now and he’s purchasing 25 more on July 12. The price is $35 cash only. Cash due at the time of pick up. Pick up your kegs at 10AM July 20 at 1097 E. 1200 Road. The house is located on the Southwest corner of the intersection where 1100 Rd and 1200 Rd meet, 1/2 mile west of the church where the meetings are held. Message Kyle (unclek) on the forum with any questions.

Grain Buy – Frank Dillon (FDillon00) is in charge of the bulk grain buy. He currently has orders for 19 sacks. A full pallet is 42 sacks. Buy now to get a full pallet to keep the cost down. To purchase a sack of grain on the forum, go to:
Board index » Members Only Area » Member Only Discussion » Group or Bulk Buying » Grain Buy 2013-E; OPEN (be sure to read all of the instructions)

Honey Buy - If anyone is interested in a bulk honey buy, please let Angelo know.

Events:
Great Taste of the Midwest August 10th – LBG bought a group of 15 tickets and have four tickets left. Contact Steve Brown on the forum if you want to purchase tickets. Tickets are $50/each. See the forum for hotel information that Sean posted.

Great Nebraska Beer Fest August 24th 1pm – 6pm – Buy your ticket (http://www.etix.com/ticket/online/venue ... abrewingco) and post on the forum if you are going. The plan is for LBG to provide the bus/van depending on how many people are going. This will be a day trip. Non-members can ride the bus by purchasing a LBG membership ($20 single, $30 family), as long as there is room.
Brewfest 18: Saturday, September 28, 2013 12PM – 6PM (Friday, September 27, 2013 Members Only night)

Brewfest is the annual LBG fundraiser. Friday night before Brewfest is members only night - members set up the equipment, check in kegs and get everything ready for Saturday.

The Brewfest committees are being formed now. Please volunteer to help by contacting Frank Dillon (Beverage) or Russ Brickell (Food) or Matt Bechtold (Logistics). See the forum for more details.

Deadline for beer donations will be 11:59pm, Sep. 1, 2013. The donation form is up on the forum as well as ticket information.

If you want to donate beer to Brewfest but have never kegged, or don’t own kegs, contact Frank.

Music: Two bands will play Friday night, one will be the band that played late on Friday last year, Old Country Death Band, and the other has not been confirmed.
Saturday bands (order has not been determined):
Lance Fahey
DeWayne Brothers
40 Watt Dream (Truckstop Honeymoon’s other band featuring Katie Euliss)
LaBretta Suede and the Motel Six
Rumblejets

Food: Members are required to bring a side dish to Brewfest for Saturday. You are responsible for keeping your side dish cold. It is best not to use raw eggs and/or dairy ingredients, as your dish will sit out for a few hours.

Friday night shrimp boil: Tucker Craig will cook a shrimp boil on Friday night. You must purchase a ticket in advance in order to eat. The ticket form will be up on the forum next month. Tickets will be in the $10-$12/each price range. Band members will also be required to have a ticket to eat. No band food comps on Friday night. Joe Yoder will let the bands know that they will need a food ticket to eat on Friday night. Band members receive one comp ticket per member for Saturday.

A motion was made to no longer have bands play on Friday night, as that is a night for members to network with each other and with the brewers from the craft breweries. The motion was approved. After Brewfest 18, no bands will be asked to play on Friday night.

Logistics needs a truck to haul tables, equipment, etc.

Beer Tasting: The tasting this month is from the Boulevard Wort Transformation. During Craft Beer Week, Boulevard reached out to home brewers and gave out wort to those who signed up for it. Some of our LBG members received the wort and made some creative beers out it. Thank you to those who brought beer.

1. Kevin’s beer – Pale to Amber Ale. Close to a California Common. Nice drinkable beer.
2. Jerrod’s beer – Pale Ale, OG 1056, brought it to a near boil and added cascade and citra and dry hopped with the same.
3. Andy’s beer – Black Saison, boiled for about 15 min. steeped at 170 degrees, added star anise, finished at 1006, 7% ABV.
4. Christen’s beer – Orange Roll Ale, 4.2% ABV, orange extract, vanilla and cinnamon. Finished at 1019.
5. Angelo’s beer – Sour Cherry Saison, added tart cherry juice. Will probably stash keg in cellar and let sit for a while.

Your wort transformation entries are due to Boulevard July 15. Judging is August 3.

LBG members can stop by Boulevard anytime for a sampling and receive 10% discount with membership card.

The August meeting will be moved to the 15th if the church is available. See the forum and Facebook page for details. The first Brewfest tickets will be available at the August meeting.

Thank you to everyone who brought snacks tonight.
