Announcements

Sorry about the meager state of this month's newsletter. The minutes from the April meeting seem to have vanished into the twilight zone. We did have an interesting seminar about mushrooms and mushroom hunting presented by Kaw Valley Mycological Society.

Contests: The Foamy Express Ryeders of St. Joseph are holding the Quad-States Brewers Challenge in St. Joe, May 18th. It's an AHA sanctioned competition open to brewers from Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Iowa. See their website for more info.

LBG Pale Ale Contest Results
The results are in from the First Lawrence Brewers Guild Members Only Pale Ale Competition. Rob Dewhirst took first and second place with two versions of his Crotchsniffer APA. One version (first place) used dry yeast and the other (second place) featured liquid yeast. Joe Yoder came in third with Blue Heron Pale Ale. Thanks to everyone who entered, and special thanks to the judges for taking their time to evaluate our beers. Here are the recipes of the winning brews:

Additional notes

The odd batch size was because I decided to do a no-sparge batch after I bought only enough ingredients for a 10 gallon batch-sparge recipe. I had to calculate the lower efficiency on-the-fly, resulting in less beer.

This grain bill should be sized for a 10 gallon batch, with about 73% efficiency, so the grain bill should need no alteration if you want to sparge to 10 gallons. The hop schedule will of course need to be modified, since this was for a 6.5 gallon boil volume. Note that the 2001 Cascade hops were a very high AA%.

The first and second entries were this same batch of beer, split to 3 gallons each. The first place was fermented with 2 packets of Danstar Nottingham Dry Yeast. The second place with WY1056, stepped up to 1 gallon starter, or roughly 1 pint of slurry.
