Minutes of the October 10th meeting

Clean-Up: Jeff & Xan

Beer Contributions: Joe-Pale Ale & Unfermented Cider; Pete-Golden Ale (pale ale); Rob-Cider; Ray-American Brown from a Brewpub in El Paso.

Nobel Prize Winner and Homebrewer: Vernon Smith, the winner of the Nobel Prize for Economics, has ties to both the University of Kansas and homebrewing. The Lawrence Journal World featured a story about his exploits.

Old Business
Competition Reminder: The Guild will be holding our second member's only competition next March. The style will be stout. All styles of stout will be welcomed, so brew your best! We will also do a tasting among the membership, so bottle a few extra.

Holiday Party: The Holiday Party has been scheduled for Saturday, December 14th. The Jensens have graciously volunteered to host this year's festivities. The party begins at 6:30 P.M. As always, bring food and beer. Rob proposed a white elephant gift giving game.

New Business
November Meeting: We agreed to hold our November meeting at Free State. We will be meeting at 6:45 P.M. for a 7:00 tour. After the tour we have the meeting room reserved.

Emerson Bigguns: The head brewer from Emerson Bigguns was in attendance. He gave us the lowdown on their brewing operation. The old Sports Page brew system is back in action, and they are serving their own beers. They will serve a standard line up as well as seasonals.

Commercial Tasting: Barvarian Dunkelweizen
Here are the Beer Judge Certification Program guidelines:

Aroma: Gentle aroma of Munich malt supported by fruity, notably banana, and clove-spice aromas. No hop aroma. No diacetyl.

Appearance: Light amber to light brown in color. A thick, long-lasting head is characteristic. High protein content of wheat may impair clarity in an unfiltered beer.

Flavor: Melanoidins and caramel character of Munich and Vienna-type malts is prominent, along with some wheat flavor. There may be some spicy, fruity flavor as well. Roasty character is rare and very restrained if present. Low hop bitterness. No hop flavor. No diacetyl.

Mouthfeel: The texture of wheat imparts the sensation of a fluffy, creamy fullness that may progress to a lighter finish. However, the presence of Munich and Vienna-type malts provides its own sense of fullness. A moderate to high carbonation level is typical.

Overall Impression: A dark, malty, spicy, wheat-based ale.

History: A dark version of Bavarian Weizen.

Comments: The presence of Munich and Vienna-type barley malts gives this style a deeper and richer barley malt character than Bavarian Weizen. Often, there is less of the tart quality as well.

Ingredients: Wheat malt typically makes up 50% or more of the grist, the remainder being Munich or Vienna-type high-kilned barley malts. Some dark wheat malts may be used. Dark roasted malts are rarely used and then only in very small concentrations. Hops provide a mild bitterness only. Weizen ale yeast is used. Water character will vary.
