LBG Minutes – October 2013

Business Meeting

New people – Jason, Chris, Brandon, Bruce, and Will (owner of Downtown Craft Brew in Topeka and President of Midwest Brewers Guild) – Welcome!
Clean-up – Andy, Mark, Angelo, Maggie. Thank you!

Librarian (Christen) – Return books that you have checked out. The new water book should be here by the November meeting.
Please send your recipes for cooking with spent grains or cooking with beer or any alcohol to Christen (Ophelia) on the forum or post it on the forum as soon as possible. Recipes should be tried first before recommending. If you have suggestions for the “pairs well with” section for your recipe, please include that information as well. The books will be spiral bound with plastic pages and cost approximately $4.99 for the 100-page book. Get your recipes in now so the books will be ready by the Christmas Party.
If you have any ideas for new books, please let Christen know.

Treasurer (Ken) – LBG has $12,000. There are some Brewfest costs still to pay. Brewfest made approximately $2,000. 330 Brewfest glasses were handed out. Approx. 350 people attended Brewfest. Staff and Officers should return the lanyards used at Brewfest to Ken. Return the Tallgrass Brewery sign. 2014 Brewfest will be September 27.
If you need to talk to the Treasurer, please do so before or after the business-meeting portion.
Membership Dues:
Individual = $20
Family = $30
Check the forum in the Members Only section for the 2013 Membership Dues information.
**Only paid members will have access to the Members-Only section of the forum and the right to vote on LBG business.

Secretary – Suzanne McAlister.

Biermeister – (Duane) – November tasting will be coffee & beer. Dustin from Boulevard and maybe someone from The Roasterie will conduct a panel discussion. Thank you to everyone that has donated beer or ingredients for the monthly tastings.
Quartermaster – (Angelo for Andy) – LBG has a trailer full of equipment/party supplies that LBG members can checkout. Use the calendar on the forum if you wish to reserve the equipment. (Board index » Members Only Area » Library » Equipment). There are pictures of the equipment, tents and jockeyboxes on the forum as well. We have an apple press. We need to upgrade the taps on the jockey boxes. The existing taps will be replaced with Pearlex taps. Possibly raffle off the old taps that are still good, but they stick.
New Business

President - (Angelo) -
Website –www.lawrencebrewers.org. If you have any LBG related pictures or content appropriate for the new website, please put those items on the Lawrence Brewer’s Guild Facebook page, or email the content to lawrencebrewers@gmail.com.

LBG has new stickers! Purchase them at the meeting. 2 for $3.

Brewfest 18 glasses are available to purchase for $1/each. Some of the glasses will be donated to the church.

Chuck Ferguson placed 3rd with his Belgian Strong Ale in the 2013 Grain to Glass competition. Congratulations, Chuck!

Bulk Buy – Frank Dillon (FDillon00) is in charge of bulk buys. He has “O” ring kits too. To purchase a sack of grain, contact Frank, or on the forum, go to:
Board index » Members Only Area » Member Only Discussion » Group or Bulk Buying » Grain Buy 2013-E; OPEN (be sure to read all of the instructions)

Brewfest 18 Feedback:
Return staff and officer lanyards to Ken.
Brewfest 19 will be 9/27/14.
The Tallgrass Brewery sign “went missing” sometime on Friday night. Please return it – no questions asked.
Schedules need to be put in the ticket tent so volunteers know who is relieving them.
Help Tucker clean up after the Friday night boil.
Set up recycling containers for glass, cans, and plastic bottles.
Galen put out 18 fires that were left burning on Sunday. Next year, a water tank on the back of a truck or trailer would be nice to have to extinguish the fires. It takes 10-15 gallons of water to put out each fire.

Events:

The National Homebrewer Conference will be June 12 -14, 2014 in Grand Rapids, MI. Angelo would like LBG to represent at this conference. In order to go, you will need to register as a member with the National Homebrewer Association (cost is approx. $38) and sign up/pay fees to go to the conference. Each LBG member will be responsible for paying his or her way to the conference, but it’s worth it. KC Biermeisters will have a table at the conference. It’s possible that LBG would be able to share it.

New events are posted on the LBG Facebook page as they are announced.

2013 Christmas Party:
Angelo toured the W Banquet Hall on Connecticut St. It seats 275 and is bigger than the Depot. It’s open on 12/14.13.
Dale Wheeler volunteered to head the committee this year. Budget for food will be $200-$300. Dale will set up the committee to discuss details.

FYI:
Burger Stand now has new Stone beers on tap.
Gaslight Gardens has a German Alt on tap.

Beer Tasting: The tasting this month is Black Beers.

1. Schwarzbier, Gordon Biersch – 4.3% ABV; classic German lager. Medium bodied, malty, creamy mouthfeel, very clean fermentation profile, bitter, but only subtley; a subtle coffee roast.
2. Existent, Stillwater Brewing – 7.4% ABV; Black Saison, notes of caramel, chocolate.
3. Black Hemp Black Ale, O’Fallon Brewery – 5.8% ABV, American Black Ale, tastes like Rye IPA. Hoppy, but not hop-forward.
4. The Nightman Cometh, Buscher Brauhaus – 8.4% ABV. Black Double IPA. Roasty but melds wells with the hop bitterness. Tastes like a hoppy porter.

Thank you to everyone who brought snacks and drinks tonight!
