LBG Minutes – January 2014
Business Meeting

New people – Heath, Stuart, Nathan, John, Justin and Garrett. Welcome!

Clean-up – I didn't catch who volunteered to clean up, but Thank you!

Announcements:
LBG T-Shirts are on sale for $10/each.
If you have any LBG related pictures or content appropriate for the new website, please put those items on the Lawrence Brewer’s Guild Facebook page, or email the content to lawrencebrewers@gmail.com.
LBG has new stickers! Purchase them at the meeting. 2 for $3.
Brewfest 18 glasses are available to purchase for $1/each.

Vice President (Sean)
Phil Bradley is the CEO of the KLBA (Kansas Licensed Beverage Association) and is also a lawyer that is doing pro bono work on behalf of a coalition of Kansas homebrew clubs. The coalition hopes to have KS House Bill #2223 passed to allow Kansas home brewers to legally share homebrew at club meetings and enter homebrew competitions. (http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/r ... hts-in-ks/). Sean proposed that LBG gives $500 to Phil as a small donation to the work he has done. The motion passed and LBG will pay Phil $500.
All LBG members should be aware of this effort. To read more about it, go to the following links:

Kansas Homebrewers Alliance Facebook page (must have a Facebook account to join the group): https://www.facebook.com/groups/309176992505578/

Librarian (Christen)
The library check-in and check-out process is electronic and is now updated in real-time on the forum.
Return books that you have checked out. The new book is in now.
Christen has 45 recipes for the cookbook. Send your recipe in now if you want to be included.

Treasurer (Ken)
LBG has approx. $6500. 57 paid members for 2014 so far. New membership cards will start being available at Feb. meeting. Renew your memberships for 2014. If you need to talk to the Treasurer, please do so before or after the business-meeting portion.
Membership Dues:
Individual = $20
Family = $30
Check the forum in the Members Only section for the 2014 Membership Dues information.
**Only paid members will have access to the Members-Only section of the forum and the right to vote on LBG business.

Quartermaster – Andy Booth (Blktre) –
The jockey boxes have been upgraded with the new Ventmatic faucets. The top screw is more sensitive. Andy has fixed this on the LBG equipment and posted the fix on the forum under Member Only section .
The jockey boxes are not being cleaned properly before being returned. These are very popular and usually go from member to member, so Andy hears about the condition of them from members, or when he needs to use them. Andy will start keeping track of who has the jockey boxes and may have to start charging a deposit if the equipment is still not being cleaned.

LBG has a trailer full of equipment/party supplies that LBG members can checkout. Use the calendar on the forum if you wish to reserve the equipment. (Board index » Members Only Area » Library » Equipment). There are pictures of the equipment, tents and jockey boxes on the forum as well. We also have an apple press.

Orval Engling:
Orval has been working with Praxair on discount pricing for LBG members. Praxair also donates CO2 to Brewfest and Mugs for Jugs. The new price list and details are listed on the Forum under Member Only Discussion. In order to receive this discounted pricing, LBG members must show their LBG membership card at time of purchase. Our thanks go out to Praxair for the new pricing. A huge thank you to Orval for all of your work on this issue!

President (Angelo)
A new non-elected position has been created for LBG Historian. The Historian will develop an electronic archive of information and pictures of members and events. This person will also manage LBG social media including the website. Angelo nominated Jenalea Myers as Historian. The motion passed. Congratulations, Jenalea!
Angelo asked for a motion to be made to have a rotating budget of $500 to produce LBG merchandise. Motion was approved.

Bulk Buy – Frank Dillon (FDillon00) is in charge of bulk buys. To make a purchase, contact Frank, or on the forum, go to:
Board index » Members Only Area » Member Only Discussion » Group or Bulk Buying » Grain Buy 2013-E; OPEN (be sure to read all of the instructions). You will need to pay Frank at the time of purchase (not at time of delivery).

Biermeister (Duane)
Made a motion that each person who donated ingredients to the tastings will be compensated $10 for each gallon donated to the club. The motion passed.

Events:
The 2013 LBG Christmas Party was fabulous. Thanks to Dale Wheeler and Jenalea Myers for all their efforts. Thanks to Craig for smoking the turkeys. Angelo made a motion to go ahead and pay the $540 deposit to the W Banquet Hall for the 2014 Christmas Party. Motion was passed. The 2014 Christmas Party will be held December 13, 2014 at the W Banquet Hall at 7th and Connecticut Streets.

The Kansas City Bier Meisters are having their 31st Annual Home Brew Competition on February 21st and 22nd called Where the Wild Beers Are. Cinder Block Brewery is the sponsor. They will be choosing one brewer's recipe to be brewed on their system. The competition details are here: http://www.kcbiermeisters.org/competiti ... ition.html

The National Homebrewer Conference will be June 12 -14, 2014 in Grand Rapids, MI. Angelo would like LBG to represent at this conference. In order to go, you will need to register as a member with the National Homebrewer Association (cost is approx. $38) and sign up/pay fees to go to the conference. Each LBG member will be responsible for paying his or her way to the conference, but it’s worth it. Click here for more information: http://www.ahaconference.org/conference/about/

The 2014 Kansas Craft Beer Expo will be held Saturday, March 8, 2014. There are two sessions. Tickets go on sale January 29 at 6PM. See the website for more details: http://kscraftbrewfest.com/

A Women's Brewday is being held on the first nice day in February. There are about 10 ladies that will get together and brew a Carmel Hazelnut Porter with Vanilla. Yum!

Jenalea is looking into a LBG bus tour of the Kansas City Breweries this spring. Stay tuned for more details.

New events are posted on the LBG Facebook page as they are announced.

Beer Tastings for 2014 will include:
Belgium IPAs
Porters - English Ales
Wort transformations from LBG members
Brewer Panel

Put tasting suggestions on the forum.

Tasting rules: pour 2oz only during LBG tastings. This equates to approximately two fingers horizontally. Be aware to leave enough for everyone to have a taste.

The January tasting is smoked beers featuring Rauchbier and variations of the smoked porter. Smoked beer style notes:
Under BJCP guidelines, they fall under category 22A Rauchbier and 22B Other Smoked Beer.
Rauchbier: essentially a smoked Marzen; amber lager, smooth, clean and malty.
Porter: either English or American style Porter works well.
Smoked Malts: Smoked malts should be treated like a base grain like Munich; Rauch Malt is a German malt smoked with beechwood; Peat smoked malt is Scottish in origin and has a more intense, earthy character; Peat is made of partially decomposed organic matter comprising of mosses and lichens.
Yeasts: Ales: something clean like Cal-ale or American ale; fruity ester profile of an English Ale stain might works well in a Porter; Lager: probably a German lager or Oktoberfest strain.

#1: Smoked Porter by Loco Brew
#2: Pigasus Maple Smoked Porter by 4 Hands Brewing
#3: Smoked Marzen by Aecht Schekerla Brewery
#4: Smoked Porter with Vanilla Bean by Stone Brewery

Thank you to everyone who brought snacks and drinks tonight!

Next meeting: February 13, 2014 at 7PM. Unitarian Fellowship, 1263 N 1100 Rd, Lawrence, KS 66047.

NOTE: The business meeting will begin promptly at 7PM. Social time will be from 6:45-7:00.
