Minutes of the October 9th meeting

Seminar: Ray gave us an overview of the brewpubs he visited on a recent visit to Colorado and New Mexico. He was kind enough to provide samples from a few of the breweries including:
Imperial Stout from Avery Brewing Co. in Boulder.
Tommyknocker's Butthead Dopplebock from Idaho Springs
and Walnut Brewery's Irish Red from Boulder.

Treasurers Report: Balance: $2177.65 in the account

Old Business
Seminars: Rob will check with Tony Kugler. We want to ensure a good attendance on the night he is here

Brewery Tour: The group agreed on touring Blind Tiger, Topeka, on November 22. Dale will confirm schedule with John Dean, the Blind Tiger brewer. Will try for a late morning tour followed by lunch and copious beer sampling. Dale will also check with Lisa to see if she will drive for us. Joe Yoder will reserve the van. It was suggested that we invite the Topeka Hall of Foamers to join us and become reacquainted.

New Business
Holiday Party: Jeff and Ellen Jensen graciously volunteered to host the party at their house.

Brewfest '04: There will be no water at the Clinton Lake site next year. Ideas were discussed regarding alternate sites around the lake. Camping facilities would be a great addition. Dale again suggested that we might be better off looking for a private property site to limit potential problems, liabilities.

Newsletter: New ideas, recipes, articles, etc. are needed for our newsletter. Submit!

Meeting adjourned.

Dale Wheeler-Secretary

Beer Contributions
Rob Dewhirst Bourbon Barrel Stout
Joe Yoder Bourbon Barrel Stout
Nathan Poell Cider
Pete Clouston Belgian Wheat, American Pale Ale
Ray Singha Lager from Thailand
San Miguel Lager from the Philipines

Tasting: Oktoberfest
1. Spaten: Comments: light color, metallic note, domestic?, thin - not malty enough
2. Bell's Oberon: Comments: this isn't right, looks like an Octoberfest - aroma like an Octoberfest - but NOT an Octoberfest, looks like it has wheat in the grain bill because of the cloudiness.
3. Paulaner: Comments: tastes better than it smells, smells like a fruit bowl, smells like a crayon, bottle of perfume dropped in it, jolly rancher, ought to be dispensed from a curve necked bottle (thanks Joe).
4. Capital Fest: Comments: Missing in action!

Four ciders from our members were also sampled:

1. Pete's: comments: sulfur aroma, high alcohol, thin but quenching, puckery, needs more apple, lingering tartness.
2. Dale's cider A: comments: Hardier, alcohol a bit high, bigger flavor.
3. Joe's: comments: fresh apple aroma and flavor, play-dough aroma, biggest flavor profile so far, it's gone lactic, puckery
4. Dale's cider B: comments: balanced, alcohol present, tanic sharpness, Lisa likes it sweeter.
