Events:

The Kansas City Bier Meisters are having their 31st Annual Home Brew Competition on February 21st and 22nd called Where the Wild Beers Are. Cinder Block Brewery is the sponsor. They will be choosing one brewer's recipe to be brewed on their system. The competition details are here: http://www.kcbiermeisters.org/competiti ... ition.html. Several LBG members have entered the competition.

The National Homebrewer Conference will be June 12 -14, 2014 in Grand Rapids, MI. Tickets go on sale February 19th. Angelo would like LBG to represent at this conference. In order to go, you will need to register as a member with the National Homebrewer Association (cost is approx. $38) and sign up/pay fees to go to the conference. Each LBG member will be responsible for paying his or her way to the conference, but it’s worth it. Click here for more information: http://www.ahaconference.org/conference/about/

The 2014 Kansas Craft Beer Expo will be held Saturday, March 8, 2014. There are two sessions. See the website for more details: http://kscraftbrewfest.com/. If you are looking for a ticket, see the forum for ticket exchanges/sales.

A Women's Brewday will be held in February. There are about 10 ladies that will get together and brew a Carmel Hazelnut Porter with Vanilla. Check the forum for details.

Jenalea is planning a LBG members only bus tour of the Kansas City Breweries to be held on March 29, 2014. See the forum for details.

Great Taste of the Midwest (greattaste.org) 2014 will be held August 9, 2014. Some LBG members and other brewers are looking into hiring a private bus to drive them to Madison. Reserve a hotel room now. Sean Belden will reserve a block of rooms. Angelo mentioned that he and some others will be camping and riding their bicycles in Madison. LBG members should order tickets regardless if they are planning to go. Tickets to this event are a valuable commodity. Check the forum or talk to Sean for details.

New events are posted on the LBG Facebook page as they are announced.

Beer Tasting:
Biermeister (Duane Buscher)

Tasting rules: pour 2oz only during LBG tastings. This equates to approximately two fingers horizontally. Be aware to leave enough for everyone to have a taste.

The February tasting is Barleywine.

#1: 2014 Big Foot by Sierra Nevada Brewery.
#2: 2013 Big Foot by Sierra Nevada Brewery.
#3: 2012 Big Foot by Sierra Nevada Brewery.

If you are storing for long periods of time, temperature control is very important.

The seminar tonight is: Growing Your Own Hops by Christen Nelson.
You can order hops rhizomes in February. Try to buy hops rhizomes from a local source if at all possible. Moon on the Meadow, a local Lawrence farm, sells hops rhizomes. There are several hops varieties that grow in this area. It is important to keep them well watered and fertilized. Also make sure they have enough space. The hops grow on bines (yes, bine, not vine) up to 25 feet long. This website has a good description of the process that Christen discussed: http://www.wikihow.com/Grow-Hops-for-Brewing-Beer.

Thank you to everyone who brought snacks and drinks tonight!

Next meeting: March 7, 2014 at 7PM. Unitarian Fellowship, 1263 N 1100 Rd, Lawrence, KS 66047.

NOTE: The business meeting will begin promptly at 7PM. Social time will be from 6:45-7:00.
