Local Brewers Take Home Awards

Many local breweries took home medals at the Great American Beer Festival held in Denver. Topeka's Blind Tiger scored a gold for their "Cup of Mud" Java Porter. 75th Street Brewery brought home gold for their Fountain City Amber. The Dry Stout from Boulevard Brewing won silver. McCoy's Public House in Kansas City won a bronze for Newcomb's IPA. Congratulations to all the winners!

Minutes of the October 14th Meeting

Cleanup Crew: Someone volunteered for cleanup. Thank You!

Treasurer's Report: Treasurer was absent.

Old Business
Oktoberfest Party: Andy handed out maps. He's serving generic grilled meat; asking people to bring a side dish and lawn chairs.

Holiday Party: Dave Phelps volunteered to host it, but there was widespread (if polite) opposition, as he lives in Olathe. Sean Belden said he'd check with his wife about hosting it instead
(Update: he has since said that they *can* host)

BJCP Certification Class: We haven't heard from Dale Wheeler recently, so we don't know more. Craig Cottingham will be going to Bacchus & Barleycorn tomorrow, and will ask Alberta about it
(update: she said "Oh yeah, I told Jackie this morning that we need to do something about that" -- but nothing more)

New Business
Renaissance Festival Homebrew Competition: Shane Lynn took prizes for barleywine and Oktoberfest. Rob Dewhirst volunteered LBG to run the competition next year We talked about getting prizes and/or sponsorship from local vendors.

Great American Beer Festival: Andy Booth went to the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. He showed off his official tasting glass. Some people were amazed at how small it was (you only get a one ounce sample). He saw the Fire Truck Brewery from Monster Garage, and bagpipes. And I think he drank some beer too!

Odds and Ends:

* Chuck showed off his converted keg, now a hot liquor tank w/an included copper coil for a HERMS.
* Jonathan Drury brought more oak scraps to give away to members.
* Shane Lynn knows a stainless steel welder who works for beer.
* Joe Yoder says Robb Hensleigh has some surplus stainless steel vessels.

Meeting adjourned for Commercial Tasting.

"Malty, no hops; maybe Munich lager?" -- Joe Yoder
"Clean w/no fruit" -- John Pepin
"Oktoberfest" -- crowd
"Bob's '47" -- Nate Poell
2. Ayinger-Oktoberfest

"Not deep enough color for an Oktoberfest" -- Joe
"Clean, but a mineral/metallic taste" -- Sean Belden

other comments: "maybe has rye", "aged or oxidized, cardboard taste"
