Untappd for Brewfest
Courtney: looking into possibility of using Untappd for Brewfest. Information about beers, brewery, can print list, can see highest rated, most checked-in beers, insight into attendees

Dale: where to proceed? $300 price tag.
• Clint: one time?
• Courtney: business account for one year. Only one event but can send push notifications.

Dale: MOTION - proceed with this, Courtney organizes w/ Frank’s API, including $300 cost (2nd Leigh)
• MOTION CARRIES on overwhelming raising of hands

Future Seminar

Off flavors in beer - any interest? How should we structure this?
• Stenger: talked to Geoff & Tommy tonight. Off flavor kit is expensive. Well worth it, good seminar, important to do.
• Katy: perhaps a few flavors
• Clint: normal meeting in Aug? At Free State Production facility.
• Andy: expensive but best use of funds
• Clint: schedule not during a seminar
• McGovern: 2-3 off flavors at a time. Each kit serves about 10 people.
• Stenger: more than other things we spend money on, this is a good use of funds.
Conclusion: 3-4 off flavors for full group seminar and then gauge interest

Sam McClain, Brewer
Hope to brew 30-40 beers per year, can experiment, not get locked into production model
2-vessel direct fire system, mash water tun and kettle-whirpool combined, fully electric hot liquor tank
Sam gets excited about process
Sam’s philosophy:
1. Elemental beers, highlight quality ingredients
2. Hop-forward offerings mostly American ales
3. Serve fresh, best beer is fresh beer
Land institute in Salina
• Mission: develop perennial grain crop to save soil from being lost or poisoned , while promoting a community life at once prosperous and enduring
• Kernza grain is a perennial
• Goal: create a market for kernza
• I purchased 10 lbs of kernza from Plow, organization that tries to match farmers with producers, split into 1 lb increments, want to give away to folks interested in brewing with it. Want to figure out how it tastes, how it performs in the brewhouse
• Brewed with raw wheat?
• Amdy: i did cereal mash and conversion, wheat was more pronounced in flavor
• No disec power for mash, must come from malted barley. Dry, high protein, nice head.
• Anyone brewed and gone bad?
• Clint: huskless rye turns into gelatinous gooo
• Another challenge it that it is very small, can’t mill in traditional way - patagonia + land institute + hopworks from Oregon
• Costs $2.50 lb v. $0.52 barley
• Want to promote regular use of kernza
• Would be good in pale ale at 10-20%, or elemental saison
Interest?
• Chuck: wants to taste it first
• Very oatmeal like, raw
