February 2007

Seminar:
The seminar was with Mara Thorpe from Outpost Communications, Inc out of Lenexa. They?ve done ads for Branson, Frank Anconna, Indy films, Lawrence studios? etc.

She threw out the prospect of doing a group effort on a How-To DVD on brewing for the Midwest.
Filming people brewing, candid shots from BrewFest, comps, club brews (i.e. Maifest and Big Brew)

There is a cost to the LBG for equipment cost, labor, but it would be a joint cost between Outpost and LBG. Several questions were brought up about who owned the rights. Need to get the Legal Committee looking at this.

Announcements:
Announced that we won the Tap Tower. $425 + shipping $74 = $499
Tower was put on display like a fresh piece of game. Tap handles are for sale via web to the highest bidder (even the Budweiser one? I guess it could be painted over).

Announced that we bought a fruit/cider press for $100? and there was much rejoicing.
A suggestion was made to make a group cyser.

It was mentioned that there needs to be more participation in events. Sean stated that it seemed to be the same 12 or so people doing the majority of the work. Regardless of if it is to stay and clean up after the meetings or driving to KC to get the grain order, please volunteer for something. It does get noticed (and logged  )

Most Valuable Brewer was Andy Booth. Andy will receive the Tap trophy as soon it is completed and Barry can decide exactly what art he can come up with for the billet aluminum that the handle is made from.

Shane Lynn took 2nd wood aged stout in the Mississippi Mash. Good job Shane.

John Monaghan announced that the New Glarus brew is in and needs to be picked up or he?s just going to sell it all to Sean. Go and pick up (and pay for) your order from John.

Old Business:
BJCP:
Any new information on getting the Certifications going? John replies ?No?. The LBG currently has 4 BJCP judges with Craig Cottingham, Rob Dewhirst, Steve Hinton and John (don?t know the last name)

Maifest:
Need a date as to when we will hold Maifest and if there will be glasses.
Group voted on May 5th-6th. Everyone needs to get going on brewing a Maibock
Group voted on glasses. Yes on glasses. Andy asked what size? Sampler or pint? It was discussed that the pint glasses are actually cheaper than the 6-8oz samplers.
Barry will do the design.
For a Maibock Description go to http://www.bjcp.org/styles04/Category5.html

KCMB Comp:
Deadline was Wednesday, not Friday as stated by LBG Prez.

Road Trip to Omaha:
Need to do a vote to get a date set. April 14th and 15th were voted on Aye?s have it. Date is set. We may be renting bus and reserving a block of rooms.

New Business:
LBG Comps ?BJCP Sanctioned? Vote put out. Ayes have it (no nays)
Get put on BJCP site for advertisement

Maybe start having group outings to attend neighboring club meeting. Don would be our source for the THOF.

Added by Craig Cottingham -- We should start having a bi-monthly recipe that all guild members can make for in-house tasting/comp. The tasting will be every other month.

Blind Group Tasting:
Black lagers
A Sam Adams Black Lager ?9 votes closest to style, 6 votes preferred to drink
B Jacobsen Dark Lager by Carlsburg ?0 votes closest to style, 6 votes preferred to drink
C Monchshof World Class Schwarz ?12 votes closest to style, 14 votes preferred to drink
D Berghoff Genuine Dark Beer ?0 votes closest to style, 2 votes preferred to drink

Financials:
Need to post a list of who owes what (grains, membership, anything else).
Membership cards need to be delivered. New design on the card this year.
$16 single, $24 family membership
