Beer Tasting Schedule 2009

#1 Post by meisel » Fri Feb 06, 2009 4:52 pm

The tasting schedule for the year is as follows:

February - Porter
March - Irish Ale
April - Alt
May - Maibock/Helles
June - Wit
July - IPAs (replaced Lawnmower Beers)
August - Pilsner
September - Belgian/Trappist inspired beers
October - Fest Beers
November - Stout
December - Winter Ale
January - Imperial Beers

Please feel free to make comments in this thread or contact me if you have beer you wish to donate to one or more of the tastings. Also be aware that the schedule is open for change at any time and updates can be viewed here. We've moved the group tasting to the beginning of the meeting this year so try to make it there a few minutes early with glass in hand. Thanks.

Here's a quick lookup for BJCP style guidelines. One of the challenges for the Biermeister is to provide useful information so our tastings can be somewhat educational. Feel free to reference these pages and post any comments or bring questions to the next meeting. Vielen Danke!

This month's tastings will come from category 9 in the BJCP style guidlines. This includes light, heavy, export, and strong scotch ales, as well as Irish ales and I may throw in a specialty of some sort.

I'd like to get some discussion going about these beers. Has anyone tried brewing any of them? I know Chuck has brewed some Wee Heavy and knowing him he's had good results. I recently brewed a Scottish that is way off but rather drinkable. The concept was to develop caramelized flavors with a long, vigorous boil and enhance mouthfeel by developing melanoidins in my direct fired mash. My goal recently has been to use only base malts and develop color, flavor, and dextrins by manipulating my mash/boil and not by using specialty grains or adjuncts.

Anyone care to chime in on their experiences? Also, please pm if you have a beer you can donate to the tasting.
Thanks,
Lee

I'm going to start adding a link to the style guidelines to the mainpage. You can see it this month with the Alts.

Hopefully, people will read them before coming to the meeting. Tell me if it helps.

It sounds like wine is going to be a topic of interest at this months meeting. Rob mentioned he's bringing some of his pinot, is anyone else? Do we want to forgo the Maibock/Helles tasting for a wine tasting? Input would be appreciated. Thank you.

Since no one has stated interest in a wine tasting we'll stick to the scheduled maibock/helles tasting on thursday.
