You pick HOPs...FREE

#1 Post by Jdl973 » Sun Sep 05, 2010 7:28 pm

We planted 5 types of hops this year and did not expect them to do well...but they have. We have a fair amount of hops we have not prepared for. If anyone is doing some brewing soon and would like some fresh hops for the brew, come on down and pick them. We have Magnum, Sterling, Mt. Hood, EK Goldings (did not do well this year) and Fuggals.

Hard to believe these are first year. Hate to see them go to waste.

Why not build an oast? I built one in two days. It would have been one but I was letting glue dry. Material cost was very low, too.

I was going to next year as I thought the crop would suck this year. Do you have plans and specs? Have table saw and router....

My method requires neither of these. Miter saw, staple gun, glue, clamps, dowels, and a handful of lumber and some aluminum window screen...
One of these days I need to write this up to post to my blog. Haven't gotten around to it yet. But I'll PM you the major outline later today.

You're welcome.

And for anyone else that might be interested in free plans for constructing a basic oast, I'll eventually be posting them on my vidcast blog. Unfortunately deadlines and travel commitments won't make it possible to do a proper edit or take better photos until November at the earliest. But when that day does come, I'll post a link on this thread. Sounds like a lot of people started hops gardens this year!

I a couple of years I will...the books say to wait about 3 year to start breaking up the bulb mass for transplanting.
