Belma hops

#1 Post by Rob Martin » Wed Jan 16, 2013 9:45 pm

Who's used them so far?

What do you think?

Done two batches.

First batch (currently being consumed as I type):
Belma Pale Ale
85.3 % 16.00 lbs. Pilsener
5.3 % 1.00 lbs. Crystal, Pale
5.3 % 1.00 lbs. Rice Hulls
4.0 % 0.75 lbs. Victory Malt

Hops
Amount Name Form Alpha IBU Boil Time
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
0.50 oz. Belma Whole 12.10 11.3 60 min.
0.50 oz. Belma Whole 12.10 7.9 25 min.
0.75 oz. Belma Whole 12.10 6.1 10 min.

1.25 oz. Belma Whole 12.10 1.2 1 min.

Yeast
White Labs WLP001 California Ale

This beer, I either like it a lot or I don’t. This is one of the most ‘mood’ beers I’ve ever made, as in I need to be in the mood for it. (tonight I am, so I'm writing about it)
I’m not very good at perceiving or describing flavors. However, from this beer I pick up distinct dull citrus flavors (i.e. grapefruit) versus bright citrus flavors (i.e. oranges, lemons, limes or 'Citra' hops. I really like Citra).
The smell is not the greatest. But if you are in the mood for the flavor, you can’t get enough.
When you are not in the mood for it, you darn near pour it down the train. (Darn near, not actual).

Second batch, also on tap (and consumed earlier this evening)
Hoppy Amber Wheat (bordering on IPA)
Grain/Extract/Sugar
41.4 12.00 lbs. Lager Malt(2-row)
10.0 2.90 lbs. Wheat Malt
24.5 7.10 lbs. Wheat malt, Red
6.9 2.00 lbs. Biscuit Malt
3.4 1.00 lbs. CaraRed
0.9 0.27 lbs. Crystal 40L
3.4 1.00 lbs. Victory Malt
1.7 0.50 lbs. Amber Malt
3.4 1.00 lbs. CaraMunich 80
2.6 0.75 lbs. Honey Malt
1.7 0.50 lbs. Special B Malt (Crystal 155L)

Hops
Amount Name Form Alpha IBU Boil Time
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.00 oz. Columbus Whole 12.09 16.0 60 min.
1.00 oz. Belma Whole 11.69 11.9 30 min.
1.25 oz. Belma Whole 11.69 10.9 18 min.
1.25 oz. Columbus Whole 12.09 11.3 18 min.
1.50 oz. Goldings - E.K. Pellet 4.63 4.2 12 min.
2.00 oz. Cascade Pellet 4.98 1.8 3 min.

Yeast

DCL Yeast S-33 SafBrew Specialty Ale
(2 packs – 1 expired)
Danstar Windsor (1 pack)

This was basically a garbage beer to get rid of some aging grain, hops, and dry yeast. The Columbus hops were the Free State giveaways. EK Goldings were thrown in to get it something other than American. Most beers I do I really blend a lot of malts, so this beer I went a little overboard on them.

I can still perceive the Belma hops, but it is not a ‘all or none’ like the first batch. This beer, I can drink any time. It’s not my best beer, but I’m not ashamed of it either.

What are your experiences with Belma?
