Can someone please explain why there is no home brew store in lawrence, ks. Its so inconvenient. This seems like such an ideal place for one.

There's a long story to why this is...

However there is a store that carries home brew supplies. (grains, yeast, equipment...)

It takes a lot of things two of which are:
1. A thorough understanding of the business, i.e. you need to be competent enough to credibly give advice to customers
2. You need to understand the dynamics of retail including inventory.

The last proprietor was SORELY lacking in both.
