I'm considering buying one or more and I'd like anyone's experiences, good and bad

Thank You,

Hi John. We have had 2 different experiences with them.

The first was terrible. EVERY batch came out "off". We returned it after 4 batches.

The second speidel has been perfect. Plenty of space, easy to clean, easy to move. If you can't afford a Conical, this is the way to go!

if you have any more specific questions, please let me know.

I've been using the 60L Speidel for over a year now and really like it. The handles are built well. I put straps on them and use a pulley to raise and lower it in/out of the freezer I ferment in. I would highly recommend them.

I have had 2 since I started brewing and have made several batches in both so far and I really like the over sized airlock, and the easy cleanup because of the size of the opening on top.

Bottom line (at least for me anyway) well worth the cost.

If I wasn't saving up to start using kegs (really hard to do on a fixed budget) so I can get into forced carbonation, I would be looking into buying another one. And I may still buy another one in the distant future after I save a few more months to get into kegging.

I've appreciated your feedback. The primary fermentation on the first batch was transferred Monday. I used a strong attenuating yeast ( Wyeast 3711 Saison ) and achieved a really complete fermentation. It went from 1.061 to 1.002 over 3 weeks. This finished lower than I expected.

Has anyone seen an appreciable difference in finishing gravity after switching from carboys to the Speidel? I am just curious if the volume has made the difference, or the geometry or something else.

Thank You,

John

I've heard that the Dupont yeast may be pressure sensitive (to airlocks), but 3711 is a very aggressive yeast and those numbers don't surprise me.

I did forget to mention that my only complaint was the spout exit is larger then our usual spouts on buckets. So make sure you have a large enough hose (giggle) when it comes time for bottling/kegging.
