As area businesses cautiously emerge from mandated COVID-19 quarantine and restrictions, a number of breweries throughout greater Kansas City have reopened their taprooms. During the ongoing pandemic, breweries have been financially impacted in multiple ways. Restrictions led to the loss of revenue from taproom beer sales, events and merchandise. Keg sales to restaurants, bars and other wholesale accounts effectively ceased when those businesses shuttered. Further, some third-party distributors cancelled orders for bottled and canned beer destined for liquor stores, supermarkets and other retail outlets. Impacted breweries that sold beer through this channel experienced a sudden drop in wholesale revenue.

In response, local breweries pivoted to sell packaged beer via online orders and curbside pickup at their taprooms or delivery. Many breweries participated in collaborative events, such as Together We Can, inspired by the farmers market model. These stopgap measures helped breweries bring in a fraction of their usual income during the hiatus in taproom sales. In order to survive and retain employees, local breweries need ongoing support from taproom sales and packaged beer sales as they reopen.

Breweries that have reopened taprooms and patios have established safety measures and social distancing protocols in place. Contact the brewery for complete details on current guidelines, including wearing masks, beers on tap and operating hours.
