As a precautionary measure I tried both my original batch of mead and the braggot today.
I expected the original straight mead to have little to no (& I mean NO) carbonation but didn't expect the braggot in the Grolsch swing top bottles to have such a miniscule ffsst when opening.
To be honest, I don't have the best sense of smell which is why I don't get too detailed in my brew reviews as I have to go more on taste, body & looks.
The straight mead is definitely a still mead (IMO still-born) and has ample honey-sticky-sweetness taste on the palate. Way too sweet for my liking.
The braggot was FUN-KEE! to say the least. Couldn't tell if there were any hops in it (1 oz. of Cascade & 1oz. of Willamette finishing in a 2.5 gal. batch) but definitely wasn't as tongue-scrapingly sweet as the straight mead.
Both of 'em were certainly loaded with alcohol as after only a few swallows of both, I'm light headed already.
So here's the deal, I'm still willing to go through with this so long as folks understand two things:
1. Compared to what I remember tasting years ago at a guild meeting my two offerings should be viewed as Frankenschteen mead experiments gone haywire and
2. Whomever wants any of what's left, it's yours as it ain't coming back home with me. Drink it, use it as cleaning products, drain cleaner, I don't care.
I'll let those with more knowledge & a better palate tell me whether or not the liquid is acceptable. In short, I ain't that impressed.
On a happier note, the initial tasting of the 2007 Holiday Humbug Mojo (2 weeks in the bottle, extra malt & hops, same amount of spices this time around) compares favorably to the last of the 2005 Humbug & should mellow out nicely for the 2008 holidays.
