Naw... wasn't worried about previous beers in it... just the charcoal/soot effect. Before we put the first beer in, we drained the last bit of whiskey out of it and it looked pretty nasty. Bits of charcoal, etc. I'm just wondering how that might affect a lighter beer -- not to suggest we shouldn't do them, just that maybe we should work our way down the color spectrum until we're sure all of that stuff is gone.
But then, charcoal is actually used in purification and filtration -- so maybe I'm completely off base. I was just curious if anyone KNEW what would happen to a lighter beer if put into the barrel. I'm cool with it being a dark IPA (and clarity isn't so much an issue for me either Andy, so long as it's cloudy for the right reasons.)
Hell, either way, I'm still in for 5... I'm just voicing my curiosity, not so much a concern.
Just thought somebody on here might have some educated guesses as to what might happen.

I'm pretty sure we're working our way down the scale now...RIS, Bock, IIPA...yup getting lighter as we go! You do bring up something to ponder but I think the majority if not all of the gunk if you will will settle before we rack to kegs ect. The stuff you drained from the barrel the first time was the result of the rolling and transportation IMO. I don't really think it's something that would happen but the "charcoal" effect your kinda talking about might strip flavor too? But I really don't think that's a factor as no one would use toasted barrels if it did happen. MY .02?

matt,
the oak barrel that the club bought a few year ago had the charcoal stuff going on, all barrels do. What your worried about isnt a huge deal. It falls out and when racked, it stays, the little that there is. It never effected the beer in a negative way. But i do understand your concerns....

I seccond what Andy said here. Charcoal is not something to be worried about. It may leave a few floaties, but nothing that should harm the flavor. In the worst cases, one can always filter the beer before bottling.
Cheers!

Thanks John, everyone...
I guess that's what I was really asking, in a very round-about way... would filtration be required for lighter colored beers due to particles from the barrel in suspension? Amazing how conversations on forums either get condensed into a really nice simple question OR get exploded into massive chaos. Thank you John.
As for the answer, I guess we'll find out eventually...

There's only one way and the best way is to just do it and see what happens. It's our own beer so it has to be good. Just kick back, relax and have a homebrew.

B3 LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!
Heres the plan. The barrel is bad as all know. So we ferment w/ chips, in the big blue plastic barrel, like wine kits are . The beer will then be divided out in kegs to be dry-hoped by the owner if wished. I can get the yeast taking care of.We already have the grains. We need to order hops. Its the time of year for fresh hops, darn ! I will get the price asap . Hopefully we can shoot at doing this in the next couple of weeks,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Barry,
Shane can concur, but this beer is not going into the whisky barrel, since the barrel got sick. Were just getting togther a group brew and using oak chips instead. I think this beer is just going to be fermented togther in the 55g fermentor, then distributed for individual conditioning......i think thats what your asking??

Hey, I thought I was in on this, but my name is not on the list. Can one of you 10 gallon guys make due with 5? Or maybe I could take the club 5, I am sure that it will get shared at the club meetings anyway.
Let me know what I can do to get in.
