Consistent fermentation?? HA!!!
Moderator: Officers
I use a $10 wet/dry heating pad from Target and use a temp. controller to set my points....
Just call me Andy!
Lupulin Threshold Shift

1. When a once extraordinarily hoppy beer now seems pedestrian.
2. The phenomenon a person has when craving more bitterness in beer.
3. The long-term exposure to extremely hoppy beers; if excessive or prolonged, a habitual dependence on hops will occur.
4. When a "Double IPA" just is not enough

Might be a way to get your yeasties more active quicker, yes... but you don't want to ferment too warm either. A temperature controller and some kind of heating-wrap or electric blanket like Andy mentioned is really the best way to go, but temperature controllers are not cheap -- I'm in the same boat, I can't afford a $50 part right now either. But you never know what you can find if you ask around... these guys have connections all over the place.
I'm definitely going to have to look into one of those heating pad solutions Andy. Thanks for the tip.
As for the heater, Mr. Blues. That's totally a use-at-your-own-risk sort of solution. Sounds like a good way to burn a house down... with perfectly good beer inside.
Happy Halloween, everyone.

Oh no, we ain't 'out of the woods' until next year when it's drinkin' time!
We're just 'back on a somewhat' consistent course on this batch of Humbug.
The nice thang?
The Humbug has so much spices, etc. in it if I did screw up you probably won't be able to taste any off-flavors.
Pee & Ess, set the space heater as close as 8 inches away from the carboy to get the desired temp!

Sucess!
Transferred the Humbug to another carboy tonight & it had dropped another 6 points for a total of 44!
That's more like it.
Trying out the space heater trick with a batch of bitter that only dropped 27 in the primary when it should've been closer to 35.
Maybe it was the fermenting temperature (or lack thereof) all these years all along..................
