kegs to boil wort?

Has anyone used old kegs as boil kettle? I think they are 15 gallons and could be much cheaper than some of the kettles I found online.
Of course you'd have to cut out the top and fit with a spigot, any ideas on this?
Thanks for any input.

They work perfect. Just about everyone in the Guild uses them. They are called Keggles. You can either stainless weld connections in them or buy weldless fittings. I know a guy over by the track that welds/builds Keggles all the time for folks. I can get you with him if your interested.

great! i might be able to get my hand on one or two of them. Unfortunately I am still a few months away from actually brewing. I am buying a house this summer/fall and promised my little lady to wait until then. Gives me more time to research, I guess. Thanks for your help and I might ask you for that contact when it gets closer to that time I am so patiently waiting for...

Ted and Tuck,
What do you need done to your keggles? And is weldless or welding in your plans?

If anybody buying these larger kettles would like to sell a smaller one, I would be interested in buying. Still using a three gallon pot and would like to be able to boil closer to five gallons. Using our kitchen range, so please advise height of whatever is available.
Thanks,
Art

Well, I wasn't able to score any of the old kegs as I hoped...
Does anyone know where to get them legally? Thanks for your help!

Sabco is one place to obtain legal kegs. I purchased mine from them and have been extremely happy with their customer service.

I bought mine at the Haskell junk yard several years ago. Don't know if they still have any, or if they still let you pick through stuff in the yard.

Just stopped by Haskell recycling center yesterday looking for a SS sink. They have a few kegs but return them to Budweiser, no walks around the yard either, let alone a helpful person working there. When I asked about what they do with non-budweiser kegs she looked at me with a blank stare and told me everything gets recycled here. Oh well, one less place I ever need to do business.
