another reason to have canned wort around

had to brew today, the weather was perfect. I did my first 10 gallon batch. And everyone was right, increasing the amount of my mash greatly improved my mash tun heat retention. Hit my temp perfect.
When I was running the sweet wort into the kettle, I had neglected to make sure that the valve was in the off position. I'm not sure how much I lost, but I thought I would replace the missing wort with the canned wort I have for starters. I put 3 quarts into the boil. Got my target volume and missed the est OG by .01 point. Glad I had that wort around.

What was your target gravity? Unless you were doing a really low gravity beer I would normally think that your FG would have been lowered with the wort addition. Maybe you would have ended up with a really high efficiency if you didn't loose the 3 qts? Glad it ended up well for you! Was it your first running that you lost?...That would suck!

It was from the first 7 gallons of my run-off. I fly sparge and due to my setup (or lack there of) I have to manually move things to gravity feed them.
So, during the sparge, the wort is ran into kettle A which I fill to 7 gallons. I then drain kettle A into my boil keggle which was sitting on the ground (which is where the leak occured), which I then move to the the burner to start the boil.
I then sparge another 6 gallons to kettle A and then I have to move kettle A to a higher position and drain Kettle A into my boil kettle which is already on the burner.
(yes, I know, it sucks. I still need to learn how to use the welder)

I figure I lost at least 2 quarts. My OG was ~1.052 and it should have been 1.053. And now that I think about it, you are right as my starters are probably not over 1.040.
But either way, it was nice to be able to replace the missing wort w/ more wort rather than running long in the sparge and risk tannin extraction (I know, is also linked to mash pH, but why risk it?) or having to top-up with water.
