Lawrence water

#1 Post by RecklessDeck » Sun Dec 28, 2008 12:33 pm

Hi guild,

My name is Robert, I came to a meeting once, and just keep getting too busy to make it to others, but I'm gonna try in January.

My question is does anyone know what Lawrence tap water is like, in terms of dissolved minerals? Do they add Chloramine? Has anyone gotten a ward labs report? I have always used plain tap water, and with good results, but I have been getting into water chemistry, and would like to get more info on my water.

Thanks all

I thought the report was online someplace, but I couldn't find it. It also depends on if you are the side of town fed by Kaw River water or Clinton.

You might email them, I know you can request it.

They are more than happy to get the report for you down at the water district office. Although it sometimes can take them a day or two to find them. I think they only do a couple of sample\reports a year for each tap. They can also tell you which tap your water comes from. I think 19th to 23rd street is kind of the line between the Clinton and the Kaw. If we can get some new reports it might even be cool to post them on a sticky somewhere on the forum and keep them updated as they come out.

Sweet! Thanks for the info everyone. My brewery is right off campus so I imagine the ku report is accurate for my water.

Do you all use campden tablets, I never have.

I use 1 campden tablet per my 5 gallon batch size.

I cut the tablet in half with a pair of dykes, half in the mash water and half in the sparge water.

For those that have not heard of it, a campden tablet is used to remove chloramine from the brewing water. Chloramine is used to kill bacteria in the drinking water. A campden tablet will remove both chloramine and chlorine.
Have Fun!
