Anyone know what this is in our mash tun?

We just got this mash tun and, upon closer inspection, found this strange substance that is inside of it.

It looks like paint, but a tactile inspection almost rules that out (there is no depth to it like paint has when it dries on a surface).

This isn't beer stone. . . . is it?

Also, what would be the best way to go about cleaning it off before we use it?

Looks just like beerstone to me.
You are welcome to bring it over and run thru my keg washer at 160* with Acid #5. Between that and some hand scrubbing we should be able to get it off.
That looks like a pretty thick case of it too!

Excellent! *wipes brow* Beer stone is the answer I was looking for. Didn't want it to be paint or something else.

Thanks for the offer to help clean it, but I think that this will give me the necessary motivation to put together our keg washer that I have most of the parts for. . . . .

White vinegar and table salt, form a paste and it will rub the beer stone out lickity splt. Rinse with water and then repassivate with bar keepers friend.
