Beer available in Arizona?

#1 Post by Steve Brown » Thu Dec 31, 2009 5:21 pm

Hey All,

I'm in AZ for a week +/-, depending on weather. Any suggestions for beer/breweries here? Does anyone want beer that's available out here that can't be had closer to home? I was in the BevMo yesterday and picked up a few treats to sample. But, I don't really want to truck a bunch of beer back that's available there.

So far, I've tried a Moylan's (Novato, CA) IPA; it'd be yummy for the piney-resin fans, with just hints of floral.

Also had an AleSmith (San Diego, CA) IPA. It was a bit more citrus-y, but the bottle was so overcarbonated I was hard-pressed to find it enjoyable. (It took seven pours to empty a 22oz, completely filling the glass with foam each time. IMO, for the style it had overly yeasty flavors, but not really "off" so I didn't think the bottle was bad.) Is this brand available in KS/MO?

There are some varieties of Deschutz available, and a few other Oregonian beers that I'll be trying out. I guess I'm pedestrian - many of the IPAs I really wanted to try were sold out. Maybe they'll be back next week after the holidays.

I'll definitely be hitting my favorite Tucson brewery - Barrio Brewing, and perhaps Nimbus. Also will hit Four Peaks in Tempe. (Are there others in the Phoenix metro-area worth trying? If so, I haven't found them. Bandersnatch in Tempe closed a few years ago.) Then depending on weather patterns I might come back through Flagstaff which has three decent brewpubs. If time and the weather in the mountains allows, I might stop in Sedona for a beer, too. [If anyone goes through Sedona, I recommend going to the brewery, not the restaurant of the same name. There's not much in the way of food at the brewery, but all of the locals assured me that the beer would be better there and that all varieties would be available. The only time I was through there was the winter after I returned from Germany; I found the hefe-weizen to be quite authentic.]

Thanks for any input!

Grab a mixed case of AleSmith for me and I will pay you for it. The Champange bottle size, and definately Speedway Stout!

You can get Moylan's in KC at Gomers and Royal Liquors.

Russian River
Lagunitas
AleSmith
Stone

Check back and I will find some others.

Also, check the beeradvocate beerfly. Might show you some breweries in the area and good liquor stores.
