Carafa II, III and Promash

#1 Post by Blktre » Sat May 22, 2010 8:27 am

For those that got on the Carafa Special grain split I just wanted to let you know that the malt gives you a darker beer than what PM says it will. Wyermann doesn't really give you a detailed Lovibond. Its actually a wide range. I maxed out the LB in PM when I added these malts. My Alt is not the typical color it usually is. It is more of a darker brown. A few LB lighter and it would of been perfect. Luckily this is the Dehusked Special so no roasted flavors will come through. The variety that is not dehusked usually imparts more flavors. So I suggest using less than what your recipe calls for.......I'm not sure about Beersmith or other online recipe formulators....Just some info. I thought id pass along....

Lupulin Threshold Shift
lupulin threshold shift \lu·pu·lin thresh·old shift\ n
1. When a once extraordinarily hoppy beer now seems pedestrian.
2. The phenomenon a person has when craving more bitterness in beer.
3. The long-term exposure to extremely hoppy beers; if excessive or prolonged, a habitual dependence on hops will occur.
4. When a "Double IPA" just is not enough

Andy,

BeerSmith V. 1_04_037 gives:

Carafa I = 337 SRM

Carafa II = 412 SRM

Carafa III = 525 SRM

With a 32 GU for each.

I do not know if these values are for husked or de-husked...not sure if that would change the SRM :?:

Good info...thanks

Jason
