Fermcap-S

#1 Post by klickcue » Sat Dec 18, 2010 5:16 pm

I think that I am in love with a beer product, but to soon to tell everything.

Since my stir plate and gallon jugs are going nonstop, there are some blow-off with yeast. I knew I was pushing it this morning with the amount of yeast per wort in a gallon jug, it blew and I lost some of the precious yeast out the top.

Have been meaning to get some Fermcap-S from Northern Brewer but kept forgetting when ordering, finally put it on the wish list and ordered this week. Received today 8)

Took the same gallon jug of 1007 yeast that blew this morning and added 1/2 gallon of wort with 2 drops of Fermcap-S. It is stable.

Have a 2 L flash on the stir plate with 1800 L of wort, it is stable.

Have been fighting the 53 gallon barrel from blowing all day since it was topped off, added 7 drops of Fermcap-S and it appears stable :bounce:

Anyone have any experience with Fermcap_S?

This may be the best $2.00 that I ever spent!
Have Fun!

I will not brew or ferment without it. It even makes fermenter cleanup easier. The krud at the top of the fermenter just wipes off. Most pro brewers use it too.

Thanks Brick, that is really good to know.

For me, I can grow up a larger volume of yeast per quart, for a starter, and have good contact with the liquid surface to air.

Growing up a nice pitch of Brettanomyces Claussenii for a bud. With the sticky foam on top of the Brettanomyces Claussenii, it won't stir down. The Fermcap-S drops the foam for good O2 contact and keeps the large pitch of yeast in the container.

The Fermcap-S tamed the barrel foam also.

Nice stuff.

Thanks again!
Have Fun!

It's nice in the kettle too.

I use it in my Sanke fermenters. Need every bit of help in keeping those clean.

Funny, I made a starter last night with Wyeast 1010. I keep my fermcap in the kegorator, which is a work surface sometimes. I forgot the fermcap and blew it off since lots of stuff was on the freezer lid. I blew it off and so did the 1010. 2.5L starter in a 4L flask. One drop calmed it down - not that big of a mess since I caught it tonight......

Weird. I ordered several propagator packs at the end of August. Started some 1007 that was fine last week - that's the one I would have expected to make a blow off mess - actually a little slow starting. The 1010 showed up swollen - kept it in the kegerator and it took off like a rocket.............

I can see the 1010 blowing off. It is some wild stuff 8) It has such a soft foam that it is puffy and doesn't settle well.

Got 4 gallon jugs with 2 liter each of 1007 working. The fermcap is keeping them under control but I can tell that they would have liked to crawl out of the jugs :x

Got some Brett B running on the stir plate with a foil cover that is staying under control also.

Thanks for the report DJ with your advice and others, Fermcap-S is a winner for large volumes of wort in a small container.
Have Fun!
