Check this out. If you don't speak French, this is a video of a guy who is explaning how to disgorge a bottle of champagne without freezing the plug. this is apparently how it was done in the old days.

Do we have a final on where the bottles are coming from? Along with other projects beer related I need to start building the rack.

i didnt read through all of this thread,
so remember that when you read my suggestion.

given the cost of shipped EMPTY champagne
bottles, would it be better to buy cases of cheap
champagne - have a party - drink the champagne
and clean the bottles for the project?
even bad champagne works in mamosas.

The cheapest "consumable" champagne that I know of is Ballatore, and calling it consumable is often a topic of debate. I would not serve it in my home to be sure. Still, a bottle of Ballatore is $7, and even with the %10 discount, I doubt that this would be any cheaper than having bottles shipped. Not to mention the only added "benefit" will be cleaning a bunch of bottles with an unbearable hangover.

Also, we would end up w/ a bunch of different bottles that possibly, most likely take different sized corks or bottles that arent true champagne bottles. Different sizes cause trouble w/ consistency. And on disengorgement day, your asking for big trouble if you dont have bottles that arent exactly the same. Besides that....i hate champagne :x

The cheapest I know of is J. Lorel. Usually less than $4 a bottle.

thats what i was talking about, cheap stuff at $4 or less per bottle.
can find it in many places around town. talk to jeff j. about it.

as for the taste, unlike john, i have not developed
a sophisticated pallet for champagne. ive had stuff
that went $15-20 per bottle, but was unable to appreciate
the subtle differences - especially when mixed with oj.

so if you guys decide to go this route and need help
"getting rid" of the stuff, let me know.

I have decided not to tackle this project in the volumes i was once excited about doing. I reprioritized some projects and decided to do a 10g batch only. I will post prices for bottles for those still interested and if someone else wants to prop yeast and start a second 10g. they are more than welcome too.
I will barely have time to build 1 riddling rack, so the second rack can be up to another person to do if they feel like doing so. I currently have yeast ready to go in about 1 month.
Sorry for backing out on the volumes but i wont have as much time or the funds id like to put into this project. The new brewery will be taking up most of my left over energy. Anybody else can step up and i would be glad to help out...Cheers...
