SEMINAR
Instrumentation - When brewing, what can we measure? Temperature, pH, gravity, turbidity, what else? Segal's Law is "A man with a watch knows what time it is. A man with two watches is never sure."
Measuring Temperature - What are our options? $ - Analog/digital handheld, $$ - Digital infrared, $$$ - High end digital, $$$$ - Digital rig integrated. Analog/Digital Handheld - Poor accuracy, Slow reads, Rarely can be calibrated. Infrared Handheld - Emissivity of different things gives different results. High end digital - Fast reads, can be calibrated, can be expensive. Rig integrated - Expensive, convenient, continuous data.
Calibrating a thermometer - Take advantage of the phases of water, follow manufacturer instructions.
Measuring pH - What are our options? $ - pH strip, $$ - Cheap pH meter, $$$ - Beverage Doctor, $$$$ - Milwaukee. Test strips - Questionable accuracy, single use. Cheap pH meter - It's cheap, reusable, questionable accuracy. Beverage Doctor & Similar - Replaceable probes, can be calibrated, ($60+). Professional Tier - Expensive, we get it, you vape.
Calibrating a pH meter - Buffer is a liquid or powder product designed to provide a fixed pH target to calibrated your instrument, Follow manufacturer instructions.
Measuring Gravity - What are our options? $ - Hydrometer, $$ - Refractometer, $$$ - Tilt/Smart Units, $$$$ - Easy Dens. Hydrometer - You're going to break it, impress folks with the word meniscus, large sample volume. Refractometer - Product quality varies, miniscule sample, quick & easy. Tilt & Smart Units - Continuous data, can be calibrated, can be expensive ($130+). EasyDens & pro units - Expensive ($599+), accurate, cool.
