dry hop question

#1 Post by Dale Wheeler » Thu Jul 23, 2009 6:18 pm

I'm dry hopping in a keg tonight for a brewfest beer. Are there any sanitation considerations? Using 1 oz whole hops in a mesh bag, sunk to the bottom with a piece of sanitized stainless.
And yes, Yoder, this is proof that I do use hops in my beer...

The hops are fine.

I'd boil the bag for 10 minutes, or so, to sanitize it (as opposed to soaking in sanitizer), could boil the stainless at the same time.

To be real nerdy, you could boil the bottom part of a pair or metal tongs too,,, but you still need your hands to tie a knot in the bag,... of course using them in retrieving stuff out of the boiling water is nice...

3. The long-term exposure to extremely hoppy beers; if excessive or prolonged, a habitual dependence on hops will occur.

Thanks for the feedback. Wouldn't the hops also potentially carry with it all kinds of nasties? I'm more concerned about the hops than using a mesh bag fresh out of the package.
Probably overthinking this, otherwise no one would be able to dry hop if it was problematic.

Dale, I dry hop in the keg on nearly all my beer's. I've not had a single issue with off flovors created by wild yeast or bacteria. I tie the hop sack ( I use a nylon stocking for pellet hops ) half way down the length of the dip tube. This allow's the hops to stay submerged when filled. Then they fall ( slide down the tube ) with the level of the beer because of the added weight that the soaked pellets produce.

Then when it runs dry and you open the keg the hop sock has some beer left. Squeez it into a glass. WOW.
