I read about this in Wired Magazine this month. Interesting article. Oddly, the original intent of reviving bacteria and other organisms from stasis in amber was to help them find cures to diseases common today. In the end though, all they could really use was the yeast strain, so they made beer instead.
And yeah, it's totally gimicky... but a lot of people are going to try it.
