raffle/auction for Blake

#1 Post by Melonmon » Sat Feb 06, 2010 5:01 pm

For the meeting next Thursday...

Don't forget to bring used beer gear/equipment, beers, etc. for the raffle to raise money to help with Blake's medical bills.

Does somebody have that roll of raffle tickets we used last time, or do I need to get some more?

:director: During the January meeting, the Guild decided to host a raffle/silent auction to help one of our members, Blake, defray the costs of brain surgery. This raffle will take place at the March meeting.

Bring brew equipment or beer-related items that you would like to donate to the cause. You can also bring homebrew or commercial beer.

We will sell raffle tickets at the meeting. $5 a ticket, or 5 tickets for $20.

If we have some bigger items, we will separate those off into a silent auction format.

To give members an idea of what is going to be included in the raffle or up for silent auction, please list items you are bringing in this thread.

Thank you!

Celeia pellet hops a few 1 pound bags. A solvainian hop breed that is a cross of solv. goldings, aruora, and solv. wild hops. this is a noble aroma hop that free state brewery used in the paper moon pils.

Moving this to the General Area, so that non-members can see it and participate.

What time is this going on? Before, in lieu of, or after the business meeting?

After the business meeting, so people have time to look at the stuff, buy tickets, etc.

Since I am new to brewing (and we are borrowing most of our equipment now, thanks to all who have helped) I don't really have any equipment or supplies to offer, but I would like to extend something for the benefit.

I have been a graphic designer and in the printing industry for the past 12 years and I would be more than happy to offer 2 hours of design work for the auction. (Typical average rate is $40 to $60 per hour so the total would be $80 to $120 value.)

If you win the auction/raffle you can have me design any one project (up to two hours of work) that you have whether it be brewing related or not. Examples could be tap labels, brewery logos, labels for kegs or (outside the brewing world) birthday party invites, birth announcements etc.

I have 10 standard glass growlers, and one dozen 20oz bottles to donate. They're all used and labeled, but work just fine for bottling and bringing homebrew to parties; as well as refilling the growlers at Free State (there's at least a few from Free State in there).

I also have a full-size refrigerator (with freezer on top) that is currently in Topeka. The only caveats are that it must be picked up by the winner, and that I'll need to keep using it until I move (a couple months from now). It holds five ball lock kegs easily, and a sixth tightly. It's pre-drilled for two taps through the door. It would make an excellent kegerator or lagering fridge for whomever wins it.

I realize the caveats might make it less than ideal as a raffle item, but I'm thinking that for anyone looking to make a kegerator on the cheap over the next few months, it could be a good arrangement while you save up for the other parts, etc. If so desired, I'll even help you draw up your kegerator parts list, and provide any advice I can give on putting it together.

All of the beer serving hardware is coming with me, but the fridge needs a good new home. Seeing as how I once got it for free when a brewer helped me out as a noob, and have only the cost of time and sweat in cleaning it up and converting it, it seems like a good thing to donate and pass the good fortune on to another brewer (or two in this case -- both as a kegerator and as a money-earner for Blake.)

It's a workhorse of a fridge and has served me very well. I hate to part with it, but moving it halfway across the country would be nuts when I can take the hardware and set up a new one when I get there. Transporting all of my other brewing gear is going to be bad enough. :)

IF the officers don't think that this is a good prize to include, I'll be happy to withdraw it and go about finding a new home for it in more conventional ways. But if no one objects, I'm betting someone will be interested in it. I'll bring measurements and photos of the fridge for the raffle, as well as set a firm "pick-up date" so it's a much more tangible item for raffle participants to consider.
